This was peak Web 2.0, sharing everything online felt exciting, not risky. (Maybe I’ll write about Blippy next… iykyk 👀). Sure, a would-be thief may need more than a check-in to rob your home, but Please Rob Me made people, and some companies, rethink digital privacy.

This was a very different era for the internet. News stations warned that burglars might actually use the site. Legal experts debated whether the founders could be held responsible. Some called it dangerous. Others called it brilliant.

It was created by three Dutch developers: Barry Borsboom, Frank Groeneveld, and Boy van Amstel. Their goal? To show how easily burglars could use public data to their advantage. It was a privacy experiment disguised as a crime tool.

Please Rob Me scraped Foursquare & Twitter check-ins and displayed them under a list called "Recent Empty Homes.". I still remember the polarizing reactions from people when I first heard about it. But of course, the founders weren’t criminals, they were making a point.

Honestly? I’d never learn Swift just for this and I wouldn't hire a dev to build it. But with AI tools like Cursor, v0, ChatGPT, and Midjourney, I didn’t have to. AI helped with coding, debugging, UI, the website, copywriting, even questions about App Store submission.
