We'll also report bilingually on politics and issues through the lens of the Hispanic community and work hard to build relationships and earn trust. We’re joined in our efforts by a full staff, including some names you might recognize.

Our reporting will focus on the stories that don't make the news or that require additional context or information, with an emphasis on solutions journalism, local governments, sustainability and social services.

Spotlight will provide robust, community-based coverage and amplify the voices of new, emerging and diverse journalists.

I promised details about my next adventure, so here we go! On Monday, @susan_a_barnett and I are launching Tucson Spotlight, a nonprofit newsroom that aims to shine a light on undercovered topics and communities.

A local news outlet majority-owned by people who live outside of the region is not what I envisioned, so I’m stepping away from the Tucson Agenda.

. The last year has been a dream come true, but dreams often don't play out the way you expect. One of my partners lives in Phoenix and the other recently moved out of the state.

When I left the Arizona Daily Star last year to launch the Tucson Agenda, I did so with the goal of creating a community-based newsroom that filled in the gaps in local coverage, served as a platform for diverse and new voices and truly gave us the ability to engage with readers.

Today, after sustained pressure from former staffers and animal advocates, Lucy's Hope finally publicly announced the closure. This is the power of local journalism and an engaged community.

Nine days ago, I published a story in the Tucson Agenda about the closure of local dog rescue Lucy's Hope Sanctuary and Rescue. At the time, the organization hadn't publicly confirmed that it was shutting its doors and wouldn't respond to my requests for comment.

Please read and share this story to bring some attention on the situation and in the hopes that these dogs will find homes.

ICYMI, I wrote about a local dog rescue that's closing its doors despite bringing in $1.7 million over a three-year period. The dogs still in the care of Lucy's Hope Sanctuary and Rescue have started showing up at PACC, where their fates will be uncertain.
