I come back into my body. “Yes,” I say, as scenes of him flinging himself onto the table at Christmas dinners, trying to fight a kitten, usurping family members from beds with impunity and wheezing his way into our hearts continue. My eyes glaze with restraint. “One brother.”.

He feasts, making eye contact with me over the prey of memories before him, a feline Discordia of sorts. Parental attempts to control his power have failed. He bats his golden apple (fish?) down from atop some once-cherished artifact and into my present moment. I am now giggling.

Plaintive wails flow through our house. My dad’s voice emerges. “Are you hungry again, you greedy thing, you’ve already eaten three times today!”. Mom: “Stop it Abbott, you’re going to give him a complex!”. Dad: “He’s already got one, that’s what I’m trying to correct”. She wins.

An unsuspecting #wceh2024 attendee asks if I have siblings. I panic, looking, helplessly, for any indication that they, too, are an animal historian. My brother breathes heavily from his perch in my mind. It is too late. I begin to flash back to a conversation between my parents.

And lastly, hours of @awatson8381’s life have prepared me for a PhD (and all that came before). I will never be able to thank him enough. I’ll always consider you an advisor, Andrew. Thank you for giving me so much. I’ll let @Cambridge_Uni know you did the hard bit for them! 8/N.

I could not possibly tag every person or organisation whose acts of care and kindness have changed the course of my academic life. Too many people have lit the way and I am too polite to bother them all on Twitter. But I will bother some. 4/N.

Even when I had nothing to give in return but my genuine interest, a want to be present and to learn (and very long emails), the people who always found the time, somehow, for me and others like me made me love #envhist even more. 3/N.

For roughly four years as an independent scholar, I have been granted the opportunity to notice things about this field. Perhaps the most important gift of this time has been the opportunity to notice those whose labour, love, and time were given to me so that I could grow. 2/N.

In light of the recent tragedy in Connecticut which has renewed interest in an early essay of mine, I felt a responsibility to share this. My heart is broken for my community, and my love is with eastern Connecticut. Please give this community peace as it heals and remembers.
