Originally born in Britain, he moved to Canada and has been working at the University of Toronto since 1987, before also joining Google from 2013 to 2023, at which time he left the company to “freely speak out about the risks of A.I.”.

Geoffrey Hinton is sometimes called “the Godfather of AI,” together with Yoshua Bengio and Yann Le Cun for their seminal work on deep learning that has led to many breakthroughs in machine learning.

He is known for numerous pioneering works in A.I. and in particular machine learning, such as the backpropagation algorithm which is the basis of the training of artificial neural networks and the development of the AlexNet architecture in computer vision.

CAIAC is happy to congratulate Geoffrey Hinton on being the co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024, with John Hopfield. Among many other recognitions, Hinton is the ACM 2018 Turing award winner, a CAIAC Fellow, and received the 2018 CAIAC Lifetime Achievement Award.
