Here’s the trailer for “Basil Basileus 3. Son of Cappadocia”. The story of Byzantium’s longest reigning emperor is finally available in English. Paperback and ebook.
«God forbid that I should live as an Emperor without an Empire. As my city falls, I will fall with it. Whosoever wishes to escape, let him save himself if he can, and whoever is ready to face death, let him follow me.»
The last Roman Emperor rushes towards eternity.
Sir Steven Runciman writes in his “Fall of Constantinople”: “Western Europe, with ancestral memories of jealousy of Byzantine civilization, with its spiritual advisers denouncing the Orthodox as sinful schismatics, and with a haunting sense of guilt that it had failed the city

this summer, Mystras is one of the best preserved medieval Roman destinations. A whole Byzantine castle town. (Bring sunscreen with you)
Hidden in plain sight. That’s one of the most beautiful Byzantine monuments of Athens. It’s called little metropolis and has a unique architecture. It was entirely built with spolia from Ancient Greek and earlier Byzantine buildings.
I consider myself lucky for seeing the Chora Monastery without any covers on the walls or on floor. Given the Hagia Sophia example it’s a 100% different experience.
At the 10th century Byzantine monastery founded by the secretary of Nikephoros Phokas, Ioannes Lampardopoulos(Philosophos). That’s why it’s called Philosopher’s monastery.
In older times Greece would not only promote its classical past but also its Byzantine legacy. Here's the Greek Eurovision song of 1976 with the, initially Frank and later Byzantine, castle city of Mystras as its videoclip setting.
Under the mosaics of Nea Moni, Chios. One of the artistic wonders of Byzantine/East Roman civilization.
I am also holding the Greek version of Basil Basileus 3. Set a century earlier but still relevant.
«Βασίλειος Βασιλεύς» 2. Η Κυριαρχία του Νόθου. Η ιστορία του διασημότερου Βυζαντινού αυτοκράτορα, του Βασίλειου Β’, σε κόμικς. Έτοιμο και το τρέιλερ με δείγμα από τη δουλειά που έχει πέσει στο περιεχόμενο. The English version is coming soon!
A map was leaked about Europa Universalis 5. It seems that the start date will be in 1337. Don't be happy about Byzantium though. They'll surely add the catastrophic six-year civil war between 1341 and 1347. Kantakouzenos vs Palaiologos.
Happy Greek Independence Day! A significant account of how Byzantines the modern Greeks felt is in the memoirs of one of the leaders of the Greek war of independence. Theodore Kolokotronis says: “Our Basileus (emperor Constantine Palaiologos) was killed. He made no peace treaty”

Α thank you post to the Byzantines who added honey to an ancient type of pastry eaten after funerals and created one of the traditional Greek desserts of Christmas called Melomakarona. If you happen to be in Greece. Just try one. Then you won’t stop 😄
Behold the capital of the Lascarids and some product placement as well 😅.
.
Behind me you see the only surviving Byzantine palace outside of Constantinople that has hosted Roman emperors (technically Mystras hosted Constantine for some days too) .
Χρόνια πολλά! χαρούμενη 25η Μαρτίου σε όλους. Happy Greek Independence Day!
Μια μικρή αναφορά στον άνθρωπο που διέσχισε ένα ποτάμι κάπου στη Μολδαβία και τα ξεκίνησε όλα.
at the end, chose to forget about Byzantium. It could not forget the debt that it owed to the Greeks; but it saw the debt as being owed only to the Classical age. The Philhellenes who came to take part in the War of Independence spoke of Themistocles and Pericles but never of
Here’s one more video of Nikephoros’ Phokas statue in Crete. The 10th century general and later Byzantine emperor was the one who took back Crete for the Byzantines after many failed attempts.
Bardas Phokas is marching to battle. Part of a full page illustration from the “Basil Basileus” comic book series.
Next to him, an officer is holding an ivory icon which feature the 40 martyrs of Sebasteia. This is actually exhibited in the Bode museum in Berlin.
This day in the year 312, according to Eusebius of Caesarea, Constantine saw a vision of the cross and for a first time he added to the Roman labarum a Christian symbol. That’s how I imagined him.
Just like in “Theophano”, in Basil Basileus, I try to add some architectural and historical easter eggs. One such is the Nea Ekklesia(meaning new church). This was once the second in splendor church after Hagia Sophia. It was built by Basil I in the palace grounds.
A scene from the “Basil Basileus”series with a lot of Banners and the Imperial Divellion, the emperor’s flag. The scene doesn’t involve emperor Basil II though, but his predecessor Ioannes Tsimiskes. I got inspired by the picture below it. It’s from the movie kingdom of heaven.
That’s an artwork I bet many people haven’t seen before. It depicts the Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros Phokas. I saw it in one of the buildings of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Fener. It’s much more impressive than what it looks in the photo.
A Photo from the Byzantine Acropolis of Magnesia. These meagre remains were once the center of empire of Nicaea with one of the palaces of the Lascarids being probably there.
The new issue of the academic journal “After Constantine”, has been released and here’s my contribution to it. Emperor Constantine I. The man who brought about the beginning of a new era for the Roman Empire. Many thanks to the academic Zoe Tsiami for giving me this opportunity.
Constantine. Many intellectual Greeks copied their example, led astray by the evil genius of Korais, the pupil of Voltaire and of Gibbon, to whom Byzantium was an ugly interlude of superstition, best ignored. Thus it was that the War of Independence never resulted in the
On the 24th of February 1821, this guy who, if things went according to his plan, would probably be the first governor or King of Greece, started the Greek war of Independence by crossing the river Prut in nowadays Romania.
Behind me you see a Byzantine church of Kalamata, Greece- built during the 14th century. It’s connected historically to modern Greece as this was the place where 203 years ago the leaders of the Greek war of independence attended their first doxology as free people.

The lyrics of Byzantine Christmas and New Year carols, which are still sung nowadays in Greece, hid innuendos with which the young singer expressed their interest in the young Byzantine maiden of the house without her parents noticing.
Happy world spanakopita day! The famous Greek Spinach-pie was probably first made during the Byzantine times as spinach was first brought to Europe by Arab merchants. If you haven't tried it yet, I suggest you do so by eating a traditional one with homemade phyllo.
Holding the Greek versions of Basil Basileus series in front of one of the creations of Basil II ‘s main enemies. That’s Saint Achileios basilica built by the Bulgarian Czar Samuel in lake Prespa

I read in one of Cyril Mango’s books that what we see of Ephesus today is how the city actually looked like in the Byzantine times(Justinian’s era).
I was quite lucky to find the library of Celsus so empty 😅
The second part of the eventful life of Basil II is available on Amazon. Link on the comments for those interested.
The story continues with the notorious Basil Lekapenos being the narrator.
I think that my art has improved and I hope you can notice it too.
15/12/ 970: "This little orphan guy won't survive one more day."
15/12/1025: Basil II dies 67 years old being the second longest reigning Roman / Byzantine emperor after his brother who's on his right.
Constantine VIII, Basil II and their sister Anna stare at this exotic Norseman called Sigurd. From the first part of “Basil Basileus” my Byzantine comic book about the early years of Basil II the Bulgar slayer. Available in Greek and English (on Amazon) versions.
Ένα graphic novel για τον Μ.
Today most kids in Greece sing the Kalanda (Christmas, new year and epiphany carols). The name derives from the Roman Kalendae. In Byzantine sources(Tzetzes) we learn that adults sang carols too. Even today, the lyrics hide a lot of flirtatious innuendos for young maidens.
We are so excited to announce that the English version of our

Two Greek inscriptions from the temple of Trajan in Pergamon. (Modern Bergama,Turkey). It’s interesting to read the name of the Roman emperor Nerva as Neroua based on the inscription. Was it pronounced like that? Or was it something like Nerwa?
Why is it so hard for the Guardian to explain in at least a single line the reason why it's called Romeyka (Language of the Romans)? That would help shed some light in all this Byzantine confusion and the medieval Greek civil identity.
I drew this scene with the Byzantine general and later emperor Nikephoros Phokas leading the army for a book that narrates his deeds. It’s only in Greek for now.
What you see in the beginning are the remains of the Byzantine chapel of Virgin Mary built in the 12th century on the castle of Argos, Peloponnese, Greece.
It’s almost a year since the publication of the Greek version of Theophano a Byzantine tale. So I decided to invert that famous meme and adjust it to a Byzantine one with Nikephoros Phokas, Theophano and John Tzimiskes.
Basil II is wearing a toupha. A type of Byzantine ceremonial crown. In Basil Basileus 4 it’s the first time he’s going to battle. No spoilers please 😶😄
Nikephoros Phokas street. In Thessaloniki. The description reads: Nikiforos Fokas (912-969) was a Byzantine emperor from 963 until his death, who made numerous military achievements.
I tried to find how to write Sigurd in Runic in a scene of Basil Basileus where the Varangian inscribed his name on column of the Byzantine palace in Constantinople.

A Byzantine relief of Archangel Gabriel. I took this photo in the archaeological museum of Antalya. Today btw in Greece, it’s the name day for Gabriels, Angeloses and Michaels plus the female versions of the names. So happy name day
The flames have reached the UNESCO world heritage site of Osios Loukas in Boeotia. That’s not a great advertisement for my country and how it actually protects its Byzantine legacy. #φωτια
Until recently many people called the spoken Greek(demotic) as Roman. In this movie clip the actor calls it Romeyka(language of the Romans/Byzantines). The one on the left speaks a archaic form of Greek called katharevousa. The one on the right urges him to speak simple Greek.
Oh gosh! I can say that my comic books are historically more accurate in terms of armor. It's like they designed them with AI. Guys! you were just one Google search away to do it right. I'll watch it anyhow.
That’s the Greek version cover. Sigurd and Basil. In short, the plot revolves around the quite obscure early years of Basil’s “reign”.Each issue will feature a different character of the Byzantine history who will be in the spotlight.
