for @fangraphs: i wrote about the culture of secrecy in MLB front offices and how it might be (literally) hurting the sport.

Forever in search of an edge, teams prefer to keep their biomechanical insights private. But some within the game believe this secrecy comes at a cost.

on rates and barrels @DerekVanRiper asked how riley greene could be so good at barreling the ball while being so bad at squaring it up. i was curious too, so i did my best to find out (for @fangraphs):.
blogs.fangraphs.com
Greene is in the 97th percentile in barrel rate and the first percentile in squared-up rate.

interesting probabilities exercise. oddsmakers have pirates at ~28% chance of win in game 1 and ~57% chance of win in game 2. would moving skenes to g1 change their expected wins? seems like it'd be a marginal difference if any .
I follow that we ALL would want to see Skubal vs. Skenes. But if I'm the Pirates, and I want to win a game today, I 100% see the logic of starting Skenes in the other game. You're trading a likely L in G1 for a better chance at a W in G2.

this week joe ryan threw the flattest pitch anyone's homered on this season. it came off the bat of lawrence butler, who hadn't barreled a high fastball his whole career. i broke down how that happened for @fangraphs:.

zach neto is small; he's also hitting lots of homers. the new statcast metrics show how he's doing all that. i wrote about it for @fangraphs:.
