Proud to work at an organization that is prioritizing an internal look at how we work in right relations with Indigenous Peoples!!
We've been committed to advancing right relations with Indigenous Peoples since the start of our work in Canada, but know there is more we can & must be doing. As a non-Indigenous conservation org., we work within a colonial structure & must take a step back, reflect & listen.π§΅

Kelp aquaculture - supports direct & indirect C sequestration, so is worth exploring as a blue carbon pathway, but there are many gaps in our knowledge! - can also bring many co-benefits; fostering resilient & productive marine environments & sustainable coastal livelihoods.

Carbon from kelp aquaculture can also be stored in seaweed products w/ potential to offset carbon emissions within & across production systems. Biochar. Concrete. Biostimulants. Feed amendments. Lower C food substitutes. But must take C emissions into account also!

At kelp aquaculture sites, kelp erodes/breaks & is lost as particulate & dissolved organic carbon. While lots of this is recycled, some is buried in adjacent & offshore sediments. Rates of C sequestration are variable & depend on productivity, farm location, & local environ.

Carbon sequestration from kelp aquaculture can be categorized in two pathways: Farmed kelp may: - contribute to carbon sequestration in the marine environment - reduce carbon-intensive activities or contribute to sequestration through kelp-based products

Seaweed aquaculture is the growing/harvesting of algae for commercial or subsistence purposes. Our chapter focuses on kelp aquaculture in Canada & the potential to support carbon-reduction targets via sequestration or offset carbon emissions. Pic: Ahousaht @CascadiaSeaweed farm

Check out our new paper that looks at impacts of massive 2014-16 heatwave on Pacific fisheries - the winners, the losers, the surprises! We provide lessons learned & ways forward to support greater climate-resilience in fisheries. Great summary thread π

Nice to know that 2 of B.C.'s flagship MPA sites no longer have any oil and gas permits within them! Congrats to @ecojustice_ca, @DavidSuzukiFDN, @WWFCanada for daylighting this important issue. Bravo to Exon & Chevron for relinquishing their permits! https://t.co/KghNs9Am3F

Bowing to pressure, Chevron has surrendered 19 offshore oil and gas exploration permits.

Excellent paper & G&M article from Boyce et al. on the value of Mackerel and their ongoing decline. This thread has a nice summary and all the links.
Atlantic mackerel are woven into the fabric of east coast life - what will itβs decline mean for the people who depend on it? Read our @globeandmail article to find out: https://t.co/DNuZ107dSC with @JenniferYVerma πΈ by @LeilaBeaudoin & Nicolas Winkler

Melissa Collier and her husband run a owner operated scallop/prawn business. Each year itβs harder and harder. Very real story about declining shore support services in Rupert & what this looks/feels like for a harvester. Hopes her kids can run the business one day.. but feels π¬

Tasha Sutcliffe spoke to the extended values that come from fisheries. Also how catch values are increasing globally, but BC harvesters not seeing the benefits (incomes, employment) in the same way Atl harvesters have. Really need to re-localize benefits - need policy change!
