Today I am calling for urgent action by Member States of the UN in light of the findings of my special report, released today: "Losing a generation: how the military junta is devastating Myanmar's children and undermining Myanmar's future". https://t.co/LzvxgRktYa

#Thailand lacks a legal framework to protect #refugees & bars UNHCR from registering refugees from #Myanmar. The situation along the Thailand-Myanmar border has (predictably) devolved into pushbacks, police extortion rackets, and bribery. @FortifyRights:

...and following Thailand's lead should hardly be a policy that India (a democracy) should endorse or that either India or China should see as a path to stability. It's certainly not an outcome the people of Myanmar would accept at this point.

Min Aung Hlaing may have eyed Prayut's 2014 coup, 2017 constitution, and 2019 elections in #Thailand as a model. The popularity of the NLD and ASSK, disdain of the military, severity of armed conflict, and commission of atrocity crimes make the situations non-comparable.

#China and #India see elections as a possible exit from #Myanmar's coup-induced crisis. They should note the certainty of a boycott and continued violence. Any plan that doesn't start with a new federal, democratic constitution is dead in the water.

Interesting read on the potential of #Myanmar's National Unity Consultative Council. NUCC's prioritization of diversity and dialogue stands apart from previous hierarchical (and military-led) approaches to peace-making and nation-building. Int'l community should get on board.

Solid recs from @SpecialCouncil's Chris Sidoti on steps UN Security Council should take on #Myanmar: 1. informal "Arria Formula" meeting 2. formal debate in open session 3. vote on a binding resolution: arms embargo, targeted sanctions and ICC referral https://t.co/z5wzpxLwNP

London has acted courageously for the Ukrainians, it should now do the same for the people of Myanmar.

#Myanmar @RapporteurUn Tom Andrews is seeking information on violations of children's rights. Statistics, analysis, important cases would all be helpful. Format is not important... send documents you have already developed. DM me with questions. https://t.co/BbRwGiCZEG

I'm looking for input on how children are being impacted by the junta's attacks on the people of Myanmar. Your information, observations or recommendations will be very much appreciated as I prepare a special UN "conference room paper" report.

More important than the Thai spin... refugees say they were forced back, a clear violation of international law. Background on Thailand's repeated violations of the principle of non-refoulement: https://t.co/cNiuF0lZ3B

BURMA Act just passed in US House authorizes establishment of new @StateDept post: "US Special Coordinator for Burmese Democracy". Could it help prevent can-kicking on #Myanmar policy, like happened with the recent (& long-awaited) genocide determination regarding the #Rohingya?

Russia's crimes in Ukraine are good reason to expel it from the Human Rights Council. Russia also does not appear to believe in core functions of the Council. E.g., it ritually objects in principle to the existence of country-based HRC mandates.

The resolution is non-binding. The Security Council has the power to impose a global arms embargo, but has failed to do so, or even to table a resolution for debate and a vote.
