The key is understanding that analgesia ≠ adaptation. Soft tissue work:.✅ Changes sensation.✅ Reduces perceived threat.❌ Permanently changes tissue in minutes. Long-term change comes from progressive loading, coordination, and motor control.

Example:.A pitcher gets passive ER “tightness” in the shoulder. You do light soft tissue work on posterior cuff. They feel instant layback improvement. If you stop there → the gain fades. If you follow with resisted ER/IR work → you train the nervous system to own that new.

This doesn’t mean soft tissue work is bad. It can be a great window of opportunity:.▫️Lower perceived threat.▫️Reduce guarding.▫️Increase movement options. But that window will close unless you reinforce it with active control🔑.

So why does it feel looser?🤔👇🏼. Because your nervous system has temporarily changed its interpretation of threat. Before: “This range feels unsafe — protect it.”. After: “Okay, we can explore this range — threat level reduced.”.

This effect is neurological, not structural‼️. The tissue itself (muscle, tendon, fascia) hasn’t been remodeled in that moment. Real tissue adaptation takes load over time, not 30 seconds of manual pressure.

When you press, scrape, roll, or massage tissue, you’re stimulating mechanoreceptors and nociceptors. Your brain gets new input🧠. That new input can dampen the perception of discomfort and allow you to move easier — for a while.
