22/ Fringe folks in rural areas seem way more out there. I don’t know if it’s privacy, more area to operate, or just the contrast with a much more conformist culture.

21/ A mono crop field is every bit as bleak as a parking lot.

20/ Nature and it’s destruction are much more evident. The artificial environment of cities hides this reality to an extent.

19/ Travelling away from the city is like travelling back in time. Literally. The future is here it’s just not evenly distributed. Damn right.

18/ When you live in the city you live in a graph connected by transit and airports. In rural areas you live on a plane and come to realize AMERICA IS FUCKING HUGE.

17/ The trope is that city people vacation in the country and country people in the city. Once you’ve lived in both you can see how they each bring their normalization bubbles with them.

16/ social class is much more evident and stratified in rural areas even though there is probably less overall inequality.

15/ You don’t have to worry about packages getting stolen off the porch. You do have to worry about rats eating the wiring in your car.

14/ Urban to rural move requires a lot of intention. You generally have to create anything you want to happen, be it developing your land or becoming part of the community.

13/ You are surrounded by farms but the produce at the grocery store is worse. Buy direct from the farmer.

12/ This an obvious one, but get into podcasts or audiobooks because you will be driving ALL THE TIME.

11/ There are more local businesses in urban areas. Local business exists in rural areas but mostly sustained by tourism. Chains and mega corps are the dominant businesses.

8.a/ Don’t get me wrong, rural churches are also about religion but they have a huge social function. Reposted for threading purposes.

10/ Be prepared to do a lot more scheduling and planning.

9/ The rural environment is much more holey than urban. Lots of little enclaves and pockets.
