Duolingo would heavily benefit by making small and easy dedicated "tourist" or "visiting a country" courses to rival this. Their focus on fluent language acquisition is severely hurting their general perception, and I believe it is drawing most of this decline in the market.

3. Competition. Google translate is the primary competition, and one that is worth keeping an eye out for. However, the focus appears to be on learning basic tourist and navigational speech for spending 1-2 weeks in a place, instead of a structured through approach like Duolingo.

People might spend 5-15 minutes a day, which is a wildly ineffective way to learn languages. Despite this, I think duolingo still can go a long way to improve how optimal their platform is for learning.

2. Is it ineffective? In isolation, maybe. It also might not be as effective as in-person classes or tutors, however, most people do not readily have money, time or persons willing or able to teach them. Most people will not gain anything on duol because they do not put in time.

For example, Spanish sentences are notoriously backwards and require reversal when translated to English. Translators will always work as they have, but will be limited heavily by this.

I'm not entirely convinced these premises are correct, however I encourage debate. 1. Knowing a language is very different from being able to use a device to translate a language. Real-time translation word-for-word probably would not work due to differing syntactic structure.

Investors dislike duolingo $DUOL because they think- 1. People will carry and use super fluid translators on them 24/7 in the near future with no downside at all 2. They view it as an ineffective way to learn languages, focused more on gamification than function 3. Competition
