You have to be a 'person' to have civil rights. Slaves couldn't go to court until 1865. Native Americans couldn't go to court until 1879 when my relative Standing Bear was illegally arrested by the United States Army and sued for his civil rights due him as a 'person' and won.
Grieving great grandfather asks police in Uvalde why they didn’t do anything to help his great granddaughter who was murdered. A random White man tells him to stop living in the past. So on brand.
For Thanksgiving, remember that the main contribution Native Americans made to the United States isn’t corn or this day, but every last acre of land. The dispossession of Native nations of all that land which started back with the “Pilgrims” never stopped and remains ongoing
I once walked into city court and saw a homeless man in shackles called to the bench to face the charge of allegedly stealing $1.61 from QuikTrip (the price of a drink). That happens here daily off national news. Nobody cares. Until that matters, I can feel nothing for these guys
Another American tourist has been arrested in Turks and Caicos after ammunition was found in his luggage. The 30-year-old Virginia man is one of at least four American tourists potentially facing a lengthy prison sentence under a strict new island law.
It is an iron clad rule of life that whenever a violent White man mass murders his entire family, there will be stories humanizing him as a “goofy” fun loving dad, and not one of the worst men on the planet, which he was, at all times. His rage and depravity define him. Trash!
In 1829, some white families asked John Brown to help them remove Native Americans from the area. Brown replied, “I will have nothing to do with so mean an act. I would sooner take my gun and help drive you out of the country”
All those people alongside the police chastising him with “sir, this isn’t the right way” are just as pathetic. Who are they to tell him how to express himself? He should have hit that White man who told him to stop living in the past right between the eyes. I would have.
Good for Turks and Caicos. They passed laws they think are best for them and that means they really dont want guns and ammo in their nation. They’re clearly sick of foreigners bringing it in. It’s their fault for not knowing their laws before going abroad
I wrote Harvard a letter demanding they return my Ponca ancestor Standing Bear’s tomahawk. No answer. Today, my story airs on Boston NPR’s All Things Considered and I just got confirmation a resolution for repatriation will be introduced in Nebraska Legislature. They will hear me
Obviously people will have different opinions, but Killers of the Flower Moon is about the Osage, not everyone. The victims it was about have descendants today and I’ve not seen a single one say this—they watched their ancestor die. I think that’s important as they were consulted
‘Reservation Dogs’ star Devery Jacobs says Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon’ was "fucking hellfire" to watch and "normalizes the violence" against Indigenous people.

Easter makes me think of Spotted Tail of the Lakota being asked if he knew of Jesus—“Ive heard all about him. How good he was. The great things he did. I also heard how the White man killed him. We never wouldve done that. We never would have murdered the Son of the Great Spirit”
It’s officially winter on the Great Plains! I never cease to be amazed at how my Ponca, Pawnee and Kiowa ancestors not only survived out here, but made societies and rich cultures for themselves
On this day in 1924, Congress finally granted universal citizenship to Native Americans. 148 years after the Declaration of Independence, 59 years after they freed all the slaves, and still less than 100 years ago!
Few know this because we are invisible people locked in the past
Carles Puigdemont is not a fugitive, he is in exile. I thought self determination and democracy were American values? How did this country achieve independence, by the way?
Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Instead of the focus on Columbus, genocide, White people, and death, try and think of Native Americans as people living in his world today who have always been here
Unlike the Spanish foreign minister not all are ignorant about us Indians
The famous Catalan artist Salvador Dali made this bust of my grandfather White Eagle—known for his vocal objection to the confinement of his people & for his role in the ruling for Native American equality
My quest to get my ancestor Standing Bear’s tomahawk returned from Harvard has resulted in them advising they also have 37 funerary objects. They are willing to repatriate them, too. Present tribal leadership had no idea these were there—and never would have had I not pushed this
Happy Star Wars Day with this incredible Indigenous representation of Darth Vader’s helmet by artist Álvaro Ortiz López-Pu that I saw at a museum in Oklahoma City!
BREAKING: The Mexican president just asked the King of Spain and the Pope to apologize for abuses of Native Americans during the Spanish conquest. Spain “firmly rejects” Mexico's request to apologize for colonial abuses
What do you think of the request and the Spanish reply?
I honor the real king—this man who threw eggs at Charles then made a nice speech on colonialism and imperialism with a cop pushing his face into the ground. He said the eggs were the only justice victims like Natives would ever see for royal crimes. Boss
I encourage all my followers to read and follow the events happening in Spain regarding Catalonia's 2017 vote for independence. Theirs is a non-violent movement for the right to self-determination and they are a multicultural people who embrace diversity
The Spanish government just approved a proposal to honor Conquistador Hernán Cortés for slaughtering the Aztecs. This populist Spanish politican says “I believe this is good news for everyone because our history belongs to ALL of us”
We Native Americans are tired of YOUR history
Good for Turks and Caicos. The other day, the Oklahoma man was arrested for breaking their laws. Today, another American from Virginia was arrested for the same. I don’t feel sorry for them. When you go abroad, respect their zero tolerance gun/ammo laws!
Honesty it wouldn’t surprise me if someone looking at the photos of the army of police officers standing around outside the school doing nothing on the day of the murders saw those same yellow glasses on an identical White male with short blonde hair, about 25, in a cop uniform
I am quoted in this article and I absolutely support Carles Puigdemont and the peaceful movement for self-determination in Catalonia. If you don't know much about it, I would encourage everyone to read up about what is going on in Spain
Josep Borrell is the Spanish foreign minister who said the U.S. “only had to kill four Indians” in 1776, making a mockery of Native American genocide. Now he's been nominated to represent the EU on foreign policy as their lead diplomat. Disturbing choice!
“The USA is a country more politically integrated because they have no history. All they did was to kill four Indians”
Spain Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said this shocking idiocy yesterday. What's the matter with this man?
A terrible SCOTUS ruling today against the Navajo Nation and their treaty rights penned by Brett Kavanaugh who was joined by the conservatives sans Gorsuch. The justices totally got the case wrong in overturning the lower court decisions favoring the Navajos. No justice yet again
@nhannahjones
“KUSI sends our condolences to her family and all who knew her.”
Interesting. I’ve never seen a local news station say this in a story about a minority killed during social unrest
@AlyndaWheat
I would have decked him in front of those cops and wore that arrest as a badge of honor and then taken my misdemeanor assault case to a jury and testifying that I’d do it again and tell them only heartless souls would convict me and see what happened
Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Instead of the focus on Columbus or death, focus on Native Americans as people living in the same world as you today who have always been here. People of Indigenous nations are the subject of the oldest ongoing injustice: theft of land to make the US
While Notre Dame Cathedral was being built in Europe, my Ponca ancestors were building Cahokia in North America. It became an immense Native American metropolis and transcontinental trade center defined by huge pyramids and had an estimated population of 40,000—larger than Paris
Because Native Americans are erased from US history, Americans learn about us from stereotypes in films. It’s not easy for non-Natives to understand, but in retrospect, I found this phenomenon is true from depictions of Indians in Indiana Jones. It’s so pervasive and dehumanizing
On this day in 1924, Congress granted universal citizenship to Native Americans. The Indian Citizenship Act came 148 years after the Declaration of Independence, 59 years after they freed all the slaves, and still less than 100 years ago.
I hope they find Gabby Petito, but I can’t help but notice how disproportionate the attention and coverage is toward this one missing pretty blonde girl versus the total lack of any coverage for the many missing and murdered Indigenous women—a full blown crisis few know of
I like early European maps of the Americas because unlike modern maps, they usually identify Native American territory and settlements. Many are very exquisite works of art. But I have to say, the most beautiful map ever made is the 1375 Catalan Atlas
Solidarity with the President of Catalonia .
@QuimTorraiPla
who the Spanish government went after for supporting political prisoners and displaying symbolic yellow ribbons. He has been barred from holding office for 18 months for that. Very regressive!
Columbus discovered personal hygiene in 1492 when a Native American named Guacanagari came aboard one of Columbus' squalid ships for dinner and showed him how to wash his hands after handling food using friction and herbs
History records Guacanagari as the only savage of the two
Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Instead of focusing on Christopher Columbus, genocide, White people and how Native Americans died, try and think of Indigenous people as real people who are living in the same world as you and who have always been here
The first map is the kind of propaganda you see in American history textbooks. It claims to show how the U.S. acquired all its land. Nice and clean. No mention of Native Americans, of course
The second map shows how it was really acquired and all the people they cheated to do it
For Thanksgiving, never forget that the main contribution Native Americans made to the United States isn’t corn or this holiday, but every acre of land. The dispossession of Indigenous nations of all that land that started back with the Pilgrims never stopped and is still ongoing
It looks like I may be successful in my quest to repatriate a tomahawk from Harvard that belonged to my Ponca ancestor Standing Bear—the first Native American to win civil rights. I wrote Harvard with my request two weeks ago and today they’ve indicated a desire to return it!
(1/4) We deeply regret the destruction of the statue of Saint Junípero Serra in San Francisco today, and would like to offer a reminder of his great efforts in support of indigenous communities.

President Torra is the first person I know that has coronavirus. He and his wife are such genuinely nice people. All the best to you,
@QuimTorraiPla
and to Catalonia.
Catalonia’s President
@QuimTorraiPla
has tested positive for
#coronavirus
covid-19- I wish you & the Catalan people all the best my friend and a safe recovery ❤️🎗
On this day in 1887, the greatest athlete ever was born. This is Jim Thorpe as a construction worker after his athletic glory days. Typical of US dealings with Native Americans, he gave that country something of great value and got absolutely nothing in return. He was discarded.
I requested Harvard return my ancestor Standing Bear’s tomahawk solely on moral grounds, not legal. The museum said today, “He is right. It’s a moral and an ethical issue.” Quick voluntary repatriations to Native American nations must now be the standard!
This is a picture I colorized of the artist Standing Buffalo from 1877. He lived until 1901 and had a large family that survived him. He has a large number of descendants living today. Very important to remember that Native Americans are still here and this isn’t ancient history
Yes, it was largely about the machinations and scheming of the perpetrators, but the Osage certainly had “agency.” The Osage national council hired investigators and sent a delegation to Washington. The film shows that
I respect the differing opinions for sure, but don’t agree
Cahokia was larger than most cities in Europe and was the capital of a great Native American nation. It was at its zenith right around the time the Vikings briefly stumbled onto North America. Few Americans have ever heard of it because they don’t teach Native American history!
The trial is worth following. Over 2 million people in Catalonia voted in favor of independence from Spain in 2017. Now the Spanish state and a far right wing political party are prosecuting their leaders for it. Self-determination shouldn't be a crime.
Catalonia president
@QuimTorraiPla
and his wife are really nice people. Hate that they have to endure these trumped up charges. He holds a very dangerous office as his predecessor is now in exile. Easy to see why Catalonia wants independence from Spain!
Adolf Hitler made the trains run on time in Germany. So what?
President Andrew Jackson killed 15,000 Native Americans on the Trail of Tears. That's his only statistic of historical significance.
@mbpuskar
Aside from the part where he systematically blew their brains out, one after another, he was such a loving, goofy dad. He really loved them so much”
Stop crying around about a little student loan forgiveness when your great grandparents were the beneficiaries of the biggest government handout in history—free Native American land just for being White. No skills required. No merit. Just White
This is a great article by the exiled Catalonia president Carles Puigdemont. He's absolutely right about borders. The people should be at the forefront of redefining world borders.
Josep Borrell wants to be Europe's top diplomat. Last year he trivialized Native American genocide saying the US only had to kill four Indians. Now he says the violence of the Spanish conquest was “inevitable” since “naturally all conquests spill blood”—Unacceptably undiplomatic!
Josep Borrell:
"La Conquista" consistió en "violencias, inevitablemente", porque "naturalmente, toda conquista derrama sangre".
"Inevitablemente"?
"Naturalmente"?
Un genocidio inevitable y natural?
¿Este es el próximo representante máximo de la diplomacia europea?
“Tell them at Washington if they have one man who speaks the truth to send him to me, and I will listen to what he has to say”
Sitting Bull was killed 128 years ago on this day in 1890
I unfortunately have seen a man murdered outside a bar. The depiction of the executions looked like it. I’d hardly call it “normalized violence” as it is a shock to shock to see, therefore not normal at all. It was a realistic depiction. The alternative is killing them off screen
Very honored to meet the President of Catalonia Quim Torra today to discuss language revitalization (very important to all Native American nations), cultural identity, human rights, and Catalonia's non-violent movement to determine their own future as a unique people in Europe
I met the Catalonia president earlier this year. He is a very nice person. The Spanish government refusing to talk to him during a crisis of their making is so juvenile and petty that it is reprehensible.
How can a man be said to be "on the run" when literally everyone knows exactly where he lives in Waterloo, Belgium? Very biased article. To me, the lack of objectivity gives merit to the actions of Catalan independence leaders like Carles Puigdemont and his advisors
Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act on this day in 1830, killing upwards of 15,000 Native Americans out of the 100,000 displaced from Indigenous nations as diverse as the Potawatomi and more in the North to the Five Tribes in the South. Each was affected in unique ways
The only leader I celebrate on
#PresidentsDay
is my Ponca ancestor Standing Bear—the first Native American to win civil rights. He was a better leader than any POTUS of or before his time. His fight stands the test of history. They all oppressed Natives, Black people, or both
I have this Black Indigenous client who is a good kid. 18. Good family. Basically what happened was a Karen mom of a White girl didn't like him and said she'd call the cops on him. She did and he caught a felony over nothing. I got his case thrown out—a nice win for the good guys
On this day in 1921, Moses Yellow Horse of the Pawnee (my tribe) made his Major League debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a pitcher in a 3-1 win against the Cincinnati Reds. He was the first player entirely of Indigenous descent to play in MLB back at the height of racism in it
Spain refused to apologize for her atrocities against Native Americans just last week. They will never apologize.
Catalonia declared independence from Spain in 2017 and they still fight Spain for self-determination.
They are progressive, unlike Spain:
The best thing I have ever used my legal skills for is getting Harvard to return my Ponca ancestor Standing Bear’s tomahawk back into the hands of the tribe. He was the first Native American to win civil rights and now future Ponca kids can see a real part of him first hand!
This man is a Trail of Tears survivor. He lived to see manned spaceflight. His name is Mark Buffalohead. He was forced on the illegal Ponca Trail of Tears at gunpoint in 1877 that claimed 200 lives
He died the same year MLK had a dream—1963
Indian Removal is not ancient history
American hunters killed an estimated one million buffaloes during the winter of 1876 in Texas alone. They left their carcasses on the ground to rot as Native Americans were starving because of the assault on their primary food source. Very sick!
This is my Ponca ancestor Standing Bear posing with his tomahawk in 1881 after he became the first Native American to win civil rights. 140 years later, I found out Harvard had his tomahawk despite the fact he never gave it to them and I got it back. Native people are still here!
Skulls of Native Americans executed by Spaniards in Mexico. One side was not any more civilized than the other, no matter what fairy tales the whitewashed history books say
My Ponca ancestor Standing Bear was the first Native American to win civil rights. He’s a civil rights hero. This statue is at the US Capitol—the heart of democracy. That tomahawk he has exists today. Its not with his people, but at Harvard. That’s not right. Return the tomahawk!
The only thing Columbus discovered in 1492 was personal hygiene when a Native American named Guacanagari came aboard one of his dirty ships for dinner and showed Columbus and the Spaniards how to wash their hands when handling food using friction and herbs. Who were the savages?
I'm Native American. We are not one big race of people. This site is not sacred to me but it is quite sacred to the Tohono O’odham people of that nation. I'll fix the headline for you:
"Sacred Tohono O’odham burial sites are being blown up for Trump's border wall, lawmaker says"
Oyebi, a very pretty young Kiowa, smiles brightly for the camera in 1894. This picture is all the more striking because you don't often see anyone smiling in 19th century photographs
"Shared history?" The Spaniards were invaders who murdered, enslaved, and stole from the Native American nations of the Southwest. This is why the Pueblo threw you out in the 1680 revolt. This is why my Pawnee ancestors slaughtered the Spaniards on the Villasur expedition in 1720
"The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro...three-quarters of which winds through the central highlands of Mexico, tracks a different European settlement story and seeks to emphasize the shared history and heritage of Spain, Mexico, Native American tribes and the American Southwest."
I have noticed a trend where politicians are saying “Native American communities” or “Indigenous groups” when referencing Native Americans in the US. I wish they wouldn’t. What defines Natives in the US is sovereignty—574 nations, each with a unique name, history and leadership
This is a Taino leader named Hatuey. The Spaniards burned this Native American alive. Before they did, they said he could accept Jesus Christ and still go to the Christian Heaven. Hatuey replied that he’d rather burn in Hell than be around more Christians in the afterlife
Dear journalists: If the Washington Redskins name is changed, credit Native Americans first who have been advocating this change for decades—far longer than corporations like FedEx, Nike, their board members, or politicians—and mostly alone
Do not write us out of our own story
This is a rare photo of 19th century humans smiling. Back then, it was customary for Whites to not smile because they might only get one taken their whole lives. But they were Native Americans—a Ponca man named Monsheeda and his wife Mehunga. You can tell they loved each other!
This has always been one of my favorite historical photographs of Native Americans. This picture is of a Ponca man named Dust Maker from 1898. I like it because his regalia is very detailed, he has a confident look about him, and the photographer did a great job with the lighting
This is a really nice photo of my great great grandpa Horse Chief Eagle wearing a hide shirt, a presidential peace medal, and a blanket that would have been scarlet red. He was the last hereditary chief of the Ponca Nation.
Native American cultures are as unique as any other world culture. I think the most beautiful Ponca tradition is this—a child walking across a casket of a departed elder symbolizes them picking up where they left off so they may accomplish more things the elder didn’t get to do
