Art Detective丨Book 'Hitler's Horses' (16 languages) 'Art detective will forever be a cool job title.' (Dan Brown after my recovery of the 'Blood of Jesus')
Breaking: I just recovered the stolen 'Dora Maar' by Picasso. Painted in 1938 and stolen in 1999 in Antibes France. A great day for art-lovers, like me!
Vincent van Gogh is back! In close coordination with Dutch Police I was able to recover Van Goghs 'Spring Garden' (1884). The painting was stolen 3 years ago on Van Goghs birthday from the Singer Museum in Laren, the Netherlands. A great day for all Van Gogh lovers worldwide...
I get so many DM's from people in Ethiopia from all parts with pictures of objects that have been stolen. When this war is over, I will start a website and we will try to find them back. Like we did with the crown. Hopefully the war ends soon. Stay safe everyone there.
In my book 'Hitler's Horses' I mention that in 2003 I contacted Christie's about this mosaic in their auction. I explained to them that it wasn't a 2nd century Roman mosaic but a fake. They sold it anyway for USD 107,550. Can you tell why this is a forgery?
I recovered the 6 paintings that were stolen last month from the town hall of Medemblik, the Netherlands, Historically very important paintings. Especially the one showing King Radbod, the last ruler of Frisia. The oldest portrait known of him. And one of 'William of Orange.'

I recovered the legendary ‘Blood of Jesus' of Fécamp ('Précieux Sang’), one of the oldest and holiest relics of the Catholic Church. Said to contain blood drops of Jesus Christ, collected in the Holy Grail from his wounds at the Cross. Stolen on June 2nd 2022 in France. AMEN!
Van Goghs 'Parsonage Garden', stolen in 2020 and recovered by me last september, in cooperation with Dutch Police, is back at the Groninger Museum. Even the IKEA-bag, in which it was brought back, is now exhibited at the museum. Stay tuned for another big recovery pretty soon. As
It's not only the British Museum who needs to get their achives updated. When I recovered Oscar Wildes ring, stolen from Magdalen College in 2002, they didn't even had a picture of it. They declared my ring fake until I proved them wrong with a letter from Wilde himself...
What a crazy week. This Sunday Hitler's Horses were reunited in a German Museum, a recovery I did with the German Police. On Monday the Van Gogh was recovered with the Dutch Police and yesterday the 'Blood of Jesus relic' was returned, a case I did with Dutch/French Police.
This is still my favorite case regarding forgeries. A 3,000 year old Olmec head was declared authentic by many experts and laboratoria. Sold for $15 million. Till I came up with pictures of a guy (Luis Bianchi) sculpting that very head out of a stone. Yeah right, 3,000 years old.
With the war ongoing in Ethiopia, it's unclear whether the Emperors Crown which we recovered two years ago, has been stolen again. We handed it over to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and it was returned to the Holy Trinity Church in the village of Cheleqot. War sucks...
I promise that this is the last tweet about the Van Gogh. But a story that begins with "Andreas Blühm... was eating Indonesian-style french fries inside a cafe in Amsterdam when he received the call he had been anxiously awaiting for" is worth reading.
It seems that Johannes Vermeer's most famous painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, has been attacked by climate activists. Stop these stupid actions. There are other ways to get attention for climate problems.
RECOVERED: The precious Roman Bacchus of Vertillum (1st century BC), stolen 50 years ago in France, was handed over by me to Catherine Monnet, the museums director. One of the most beautiful Roman antiquities ever found in France (excavated in 1894) is back where it belongs...

Today the ‘Blood of Jesus', one of the holiest relics of the Catholic Church, will return during an official ceremony to the Church of Fecamp. Said to contain blood of Jesus Christ. I recovered it last year after it was stolen. They forgot to invite me but I wish them a happy day
Welcome to all my new Ethiopian followers. Let's try to recover more sacred and other stolen Ethiopian treasures and bring them back to where they belong...
Oscar Wilde's ring, stolen from Magdalen College, Oxford, in 2002 and recently recovered by me, is now officialy back to where it belongs. Oscar Wilde, one of the most intelligent and lovely men ever to walk through Oxford.
A painting from an unknown painter was about to be auctioned for $1.600. Now it turns out to be a lost Caravaggio worth tens of millions. Soon to be exhibited in Museo del Prado, Madrid. Great story.
Today, 32 years ago, two thieves disguised as police officers robbed the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum of thirteen works worth some $500 million – the greatest art theft in history. The museum, the FBI and even I are still looking for those paintings... Well, you never know.
Forgery of the month: this fake 'Van Gogh' is being offered on the Art market. The provenance is great: Hitler supposedly stole it and hung it on the wall at the 'Berghof'. Even a photo is included, showing Hitler staring at the painting. But now compare pictures 3 and 4...
This is as close as one can get to Jesus Christ, The Knights Templar and the Holy Grail. As a Catholic myself and a huge Dan Brown fan, it doesn’t get any better…
Thank you all for the nice reactions on my social media and email from all over the world. The nicest one was from a good protestant friend (yes you, Jan) 😉
Now for the next one.

💀 Our government have revealed plans for MORE oil licences, knowing it will kill millions. In response, two supporters of Just Stop Oil smashed the Rokeby Venus — slashed by Mary Richardson in 1914.
⏱ Deeds, not words:
Mafia boss Matteo 'Diabolik' Denaro, the "boss of all bosses" and one of the world's most wanted criminals, arrested after 30 years on the run. Many people, including myself, think that 'Diabolik knows what happened with the 1969 stolen Caravaggio...
BIG NEWS: huge part of the jewels, stolen from the Green Vault in Dresden, have been recovered, apparently after a deal with the thieves who are in jail. It was one of the biggest heists ever. Congrats to all!
Climate activists have just thrown vegetable soup on Van Gogh’s The Sower on display in Rome. It's getting pathetic. As said, there are better ways to get attention. This is pissing a lot of people off. Even people who are as concerned as them about climate-problems.
A painting lost since 1943 was just returned by us to the heirs of the Jewish owner, a dutch woman who was murdered in Sobibor. All parties want to remain anonymous. A nice ending for a very sad story...
Today one year ago, I handed Bacchus of Vertillum (1st century BC) over to Catherine Monnet. She is the director of the museum from which Bacchus was stolen 50 years ago. One of the most beautiful Roman antiquities ever found in France, excavated in 1894.
In front of four of the five paintings that I recovered together with Dutch Police in 2015. They were stolen from a Dutch Museum and ended up in hands of Ukranian gangsters (and Secret Service). Still 19 lost but... Stay tuned.
The net is closing in on the thieves from the Tefaf art fair. The clock is ticking. Just a matter of time until they get arrested. Drink another Rakija before it's too late...
One million dollar question: who was the initiator? That will be a shock.
Sometimes I realise I live in a complete bubble. Never heard of Joe Rogan. First time I found out who (or what) the Kardashians are was when they got involved in stolen art. And I just realised that the Olympic games have begun. I should go out more...
Hopefully thieves finally start to realise that stealing art is useless. You can not sell it, you get a lot of prisontime and huge fines. Just stop stealing in general and specifically art...
Sorry that I could not answer everyone today. I had so many interviews that I just wasn't able to. Will try to catch up tomorrow. Thanks for all the support.
BREAKING: A very important 13th century painting by Manfredino di Alberto (world heritage), stolen in 1988 in Varrenze, Italy, was tracked down by me in Canada, after a tip by Michel van Rijn. Today it was presented by the Italian minister to the press.
After years of searching for it, here it is: Oscar Wilde's stolen ring. Thought to be melted down but in fact it was stolen twice...
"Ordinary riches can be stolen; real riches cannot." Oscar Wilde
Breaking: Another huge succes for Dutch Police. This morning a suspect has been arrested in connection with last years theft of the Van Gogh painting 'Lentetuin' in the Netherlands. The plot thickens...
In September my new series (6 episodes) will be aired. Famous art thefts solved LIVE in front of a camera. No similar series anywhere in the world as far as I know. For the moment only on Dutch tv.
I hereby officialy claim the worlds fastest cracking of an art theft. It took me, together with the Dutch Art Police (best in the world), exactly 2,5 hours to track the stolen piece down and arrange for its return.
Today, three years ago, we returned Oscar Wilde's ring to Magdalen College, Oxford, from where it was stolen in 2002.
“You will always be fond of me. I represent to you all the sins you never had the courage to commit.”
― Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
Getting closer to another stolen religious object. This time we will make some Italians happy. We might need help carrying it, as it is huge. Any volunteers? 🙂
One of the most searched after stolen paintings, The Concert by Vermeer, stolen in 1990, has been located. Turns out it's on the USS Enterprise in the 23rd century, see the newest episode of Star Trek 'Strange New Worlds'...
Case closed.
Can we just stop stealing paintings? I am still tracking down the two from last year, the Van Gogh and the Frans Hals. And many others. These guys drive me nuts. And again I emphasize that stealing is useless: you can't trade them (anymore) for less jailtime. Those days are over.
Yesterday the museum Zitadelle Spandau in Berlin presented 'Hitler's Horses', Hitler's favorite statues, once adorning the Reich Chancellery. They were lost during the war but together with the German Police I was able to track them down in 2015. See my book about that adventure.
Today, six years ago, I unpacked La Adolescence by Tamara de Lempicka. Stolen in 2009 from a Dutch museum. La Musicienne was later sold at auction for $ 9 million, a record. One of the most beautiful pieces I ever recovered...
George. S. (The Greek Picasso-thief) wanted to find out whether he had left any traces. To find out, he did something brilliant. He joined English Police. If he would pass that test, there were no traces... The Guy in the middle😎
This week in 2018 I recovered in cooperation with Dutch Police the mosaic of St. Mark, stolen in the 1970's from Cyprus. One of the highlights of early Byzantine art. We are still looking for one other piece, hidden behind the wall of a restaurant.
Soon I'm going to reveal what happened to the missing paintings of one of the most infamous art heists ever. It's a story about priceless paintings, organised crime and even murder. But above all about stupidity...
In 2015 five paintings by Francis Bacon were stolen in Madrid, worth €30 million. The biggest theft of contemporary art in Spain. Three paintings were recovered, two still missing. Now they try to sell them in Germany. Give it up, guys. It's useless. (foto's copyright thieves)
On a dark and cold night, 50 years ago, they broke into a museum and took an amazing object with them. There was never a trace. Until now. With the help of Dutch and French Police I was able to find it.
More coming this week...
This is the most important painting missing since WWII: Portrait of a Young Man by Raphael. Stolen from Poland by the nazis. Some people, including me, still think the painting survived the war instead of being burned in a saltmine. Someone must know something...
Another crazy story: A painting stolen during WWI (1918) from a museum in Amiens, France, has probably been located. A curator noticed it in the background of a photograph of Madonna (the singer) at her home published in Paris Match magazine.
There have been many famous art thefts on various continents that are completely unrelated. But I get more and more proof that somehow the loot ends up in the hands of one person which I can not name yet. You can't make it up. It's bizarre. Anyway, stay tuned...
If you have read almost all the books in the world and you wonder which one to pick now: 'Hitler's Horses' has been translated in 15 languages (see below).
Czech Republic (CPress/Albatros)
English (UK & BC excl Can) (Ebury)
Film/TV rights (MGM)
France (Dunod)
Greece
Breaking: This very important and precious painting by Frans Hals - officialy Dutch National Heritage - was stolen yesterday (Frans Hals' day of death) from a museum in Leerdam, The Netherlands. Previous stolen in 1988 and 2011.
The hunt is on...
I was just informed that my book 'Hitlers Horses' will also be translated into English. I'm flattered... Hopefully the reactions in England will be as positive as in The Netherlands.
What a year it was! The Picasso, the Visigoth reliefs, the Ethiopian Emperors Crown and the Ring of Oscar Wilde. And still one to add in the next week...
This is still one of my favorite cases. A 3,000 year old Olmec head was declared authentic by many topexperts and laboratoria, and sold for $ 15 million. Till I came up with pictures of a guy (Luis Bianchi) sculpting that very head out of a stone...

Me extrana que ningun periodico Espanol ha publicado algo sobre las fotos que he pubIicado del los tesoros robados in 2012 del 'Museo Oriental' in Valladolid. Son fotos recientes que prueban que los tesoros robados estan de venta...
Despite that they forgot to invite me 😅, the return today of the ‘Blood of Jesus', one of the holiest relics of the Catholic Church, was great. Said to contain blood drops of Jesus Christ. I recovered it last year after it was stolen.
