I guess the City assumes that no one would go through this process if owners weren't planning to build. But, it turns out, some very greedy outside developers are willing to navigate the system just to flip plans for profit. It's been 2+ years since this original SUP approval.

Funny that there are 12 steps to Planning and Development Review with the City of Richmond. The 13th step should be building permits, construction, and inspections? The SUP approved next to my property has 28 days until it expires if the owner doesn't get building permits.

So, learn and move on. When people show you who they are, believe it.

I was literally about to apply the "college rule" and hang up at the ten-minute mark, sending an email that they should reschedule. In hindsight, I should've. Because they got an impression of me that's inaccurate, not the usual me. But I think I got an accurate view of them.

I'm generally known among coworkers as the guy who lightens the mood with a good joke, the one to ask about upcoming local events, the person you want on your jeopardy team. I handle pretty much anything. But I'm not going to be fake and effervescent about you disrespecting me.

I likely would've turned it down if I had to report to this person. She made me sit staring at a blank screen with an AI transcription bot (from the recruiting agency) ready to write down anything I said. Awful. They didn't tell me it would be recorded, either. People, do better.

I had an awful interview on Friday. Someone I knew reputationally. She was almost 10 minutes late for a 30-minute video call. Only asked "Tell me about yourself," then talked at me for the remainder. Today, her feedback was they wanted someone more "bubbly." 🤣.

I can name some other factors that drive low engagement from civic associations to city hall, as well as residents' low engagement with civic associations in return. "Richmond’s Board of Zoning Appeals wants to hear more from neighborhood associations"

They never call anymore. And they never write. Lately, local civic associations have been notably silent when it comes to working with the local Board of Zoning Appeals.

So eager to put resources to new outside development, but what of existing residents and businesses? "The saga of the Richmond gym stuck on port-a‑potties for over 100 days"

The saga is proof that being the next-door neighbor to a shiny new development in a rapidly changing city can really stink.

My mid-70-year-old mom brought up genocide in Gaza unprompted the other day. I thought to myself, wow the Dems really need to sort out messaging here quick. Because people see what’s happening, but we keep fighting over Islamophobia and antisemitism lines. Case in point.

🧵 1/ Cool fact: the @VAYD Political Director now argues that Jewish identity is supremacist. Yeah, you read that right. The person who’s shaping our next generation thinks a core part of Jewish identity is irredeemably oppressive. That’s not activism. That’s erasure.

This was our youngest’s last classroom in the building. The basement had mold and mouse droppings would be on all surfaces in the mornings. Today was his first time back inside in 3.5 years. He’s so psyched to return for fifth grade. We must do so much better for our children.

Wonderful look inside William Fox Elementary School tonight. My heart is so full with gratitude for everyone who had a hand in this rebuilding process. Now let’s fix up our other Richmond schools too! #PublicEducation

Black drivers were being stopped by RPD 5x as often as white drivers. If not racial profiling, how is it explained? Wonder what policy and procedure change they implemented to reduce the disparity.

Nice crowd for National Night Out in the Museum District. Thanks to our civic association volunteers and neighbors for always being supportive. Thanks to RPD and RFD for always being ready to serve. Bonus: I met local celeb Ernie, the arson dog.

Interesting example of preventing bad development. What would it take for Richmond to buy land to protect it as green space? 🤔 "Henrico to buy Tuckahoe land for new neighborhood park after residents rally" via @rtdnews.

The land was previously slated for apartments, assisted living and a convenience store. It will soon become a park targeted at a hyper-local area.

@maddow Anyway, just what was on my mind while walking the dog and processing the news, and then came back to find this video on my YT homepage. We need to support each other, support our elections, and hold our electeds accountable, especially as they try to limit our democratic rights.
