Aesthetically, we lost something when all the operators became fully sleeve-tattooed and roided out, as if they do arm wrestling on a beach for work. Culture shift I guess. These guys used to look like accountants. No "gray man" meme needed, they came that way.

I've listened to quite a few different interviews with guys from devgru or cag (let's not discuss the tattoos) and a common point is they just drill fundamentals over and over. Thus, I have to think there is basically no downside to endlessly demonstrating the fundamentals.

Artists hate that I'm always on the right side of issues and also rigorously philosophical and logical. I can't help it, I read old books, my IQ is very high. But in my defense I have freely shared more tuts than anyone who hates me. I'm literally just being a better person.

Even simple microtexture goes a long way towards making materials believable, and is pretty easy to set up in blender shader graphs. Doing this with different noises, ranges, and channel contribution on different materials helps to visually separate them also.

Usually you want chamfers on convex edges and fillets on concave edges. Not a 100% of the time rule but applies most of the time. If you fillet a convex edge it's usually for a specific ergonomic or aesthetic reason. Chamfering a concave edge is rarely the move.

When you're very new to designing things in 3d, it's hard to even know what to do. Good practice is make like 30 hardsurface objects with zero function. One a day, just make them look cool in some way. You will be a different person at the end of this. It should be exhausting

When you present something, remember that the camera and the lens are part of the design, because they're transforming the design for the viewer to see. One single change in one single variable like focal length can make a huge difference. I almost exclusively shoot long lenses.

Game artists, when you find yourselves making AR15s, please dont do this detail. I see it all the time and it's a mistake. The fire selector thumb tab does not drag on the receiver, it's offset from it. These surfaces are not in contact with each other at all.
