It’s live! I sat down with Celine Song last Sunday for @awards_watch to talk Materialists, how it reflects her filmmaking ambitions, and working with her crackerjack trio of Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. A wonderful chat!

I don't think I've said "Ow!" so many times as I did while watching Ballerina. A surprisingly effective barrage of entertaining, diabolical kills. (So much fire, so many maiming explosions.) Ana de Armas is the queen of ass-kicking, and Angelica Huston is so much fun to watch.

Variety being forced to change that shady Superman line in their review of Heads of State (a comparison didn't make sense in the first place). whew, chile.

I was maybe too young to be watching Nip/Tuck when I did, but I knew Julian McMahon was doing beautiful, impactful work as Dr. Troy grappled with his foster father grooming and abusing him. A painful, powerful scene, gracefully and vulnerably performed. He will be missed.

I was just thinking how great it was seeing him on screen again in The Residence. And he just was incredible on Nip/Tuck. Such a loss, RIP.

Like, I hope that people will read my review on Tuesday and come away with a helpful understanding of the film’s place in the Superman conversation. That matters more to me as a critic than people agreeing with me about it being “good” or “bad.” That’s not even that interesting.

Reviews do mean something. The best ones help fit a film within a specific context and use history and general cinematic conventions to assess whether a film succeeds in its intent. They don’t have to sway whether you enjoy a film, but they should expand your understanding of it.

Like, I’m sorry I like talking about things I like and I use language that expresses that like? What would people prefer?. “I like this thing. It was good. Have a nice day”? . Sorry, y’all, that’s not and will never be me.

If I had to rank these four (who are all in my top 15 so far):.1. Chris Evans, Materialists .2. Wunmi Mosaku, Sinners.3. MBJ, Sinners.4. Michael Cera, The Phoenician Scheme. But I would slot Robert Pattinson for Mickey 17 in the top spot.

One last thought on Rebirth: Jonathan Bailey carries the film and gives a better performance than it deserves. The scene where he touches the giant dinosaur is genuinely stunning and is one of my favorite acting moments this year. It’s a shame the rest of the film surrounds it.

The premise of Jurassic World: Rebirth - dinosaurs are boring now - already strains credulity to a near-fatal point, but then to fail so spectacularly in subverting said premise by actually making most of the dinosaurs boring? A staggering failure in my eyes.

Jurassic World: Rebirth has two scenes (including this one) that capture the awe and terror of dinosaurs. The rest can be jettisoned into the sun, with a diabolically dumb script and flat direction that commits the cardinal sin of making dinosaurs dull. Jonathan Bailey is a star.

It would be one thing if Pedro Pascal was fronting every major blockbuster this year, but Materialists is topping out at $40M max, most people aren’t watching Eddington, and he had small roles in TLOU S2 and Gladiator II. The “he’s in everything” complaints are so tired.

This is the mealy-mouthed, obfuscating, bumbling, "I didn't know it would be this bad even though everyone with a functioning frontal cortex told me it would be this bad" bullshit that millions of people go up for? Send the meteor already, my God.

We need to move beyond “history will judge you” and “this is your legacy” conversations when it comes to politics. They don’t care about their legacy, the future, and what history books will say. They’re living in the now. Half of them won’t be alive in 30 years. They don’t care.

It must be nice to either be stupid or evil enough to vote for people who essentially codified your death into law. My heart goes out to the communities that will be undone by that bill, even those who championed it because they decided a Black president was too much for them.

The utter contempt that legislators have for the American people is staggering, whether they’re voting for a bill that will destroy the lives of our most vulnerable, or standing around for eight hours pontificating about said bill, knowing it is ultimately pointless.
