We conclude with a call for academics and practitioners to broaden the conversation around content moderation, especially regarding adult content and non-Western platforms, and we offer a replicable method for comparative policy research.

For example, the identity verification and speech restrictions on negative topics of webcamming platforms are closer to policies of Chinese livestreaming platforms than Western ones, leading us to discuss a broader tradeoff between sexual expression and broadcaster speech.

Both adult webcamming platforms and the Korean platform in our study (AfreecaTV, now SOOP) had larger shares of community-specific rules, revealing industry-sector and geographic exclusions within industry standards that sometimes intersect in interesting ways.

The commonalities between mainstream platforms (e.g., YouTube, Twitch) and alternative platforms (e.g., Rumble, DLive) are particularly surprising given the latter rhetorically distances themselves from the “censorship” of Trust and Safety teams and findings from earlier research.

We find significant commonalities in the policy priorities of 12 diverse livestreaming and adult webcamming platforms, supporting a consensus around industry standards within Trust & Safety, even among alternative and adult platforms.

What a great day to announce a new publication 😅 but also, I really love this article and am happy that it’s out in the world. Check it out if you’re interested in creators, content moderation, algorithmic bias, and/or platformed racism.

What do creators do when they feel that social media platforms aren’t treating them fairly? Our study of a controversy about racism and bias on YouTube, out now #openaccess in Internet Policy Review, offers a new answer: they participate in aspirational platform governance.

I'm very much looking forward to continuing my (surprisingly international) academic adventures, but it will be bittersweet to leave my top-tier colleagues and friends at Hebrew University.
