Just has been a rough season for the relief pitchers or just Dbacks pitchers in general. Team has gotten by through sheer grit, but now we’re about to see a slide.

Here is hoping that the diamondback training staff guys took advantage of the three day weekend to update their LinkedIn.

Picking back to how I was watching Tom Brady play for the time I was eight years old till I turned 30. It’s probably because of how time changes when you are older, but this feels like it’s been hardly anytime at all compared to that.

And it’s where I think that if the cardinals end up middling and Murray with a defense & these guys doesn’t succeed…they’ll be able to move him for assets and move on and get better regardless. Emotions can cloud all of that though especially for fans.

If you look at the Falcons when they were forced to trade Matt Ryan and how they have struggled since then it’s pretty obvious that you can’t just move on from a mid QB.

The biggest thing is that it comes down to people want to upgrade a position that is notoriously difficult to find an upgrade or— you don’t upgrade the position, but you get cheaper with a young guy. There’s always new guys so it’s better to take a swing. But the counterpoint….

I think part of the perspective revolves around the fact that the gap between the elite quarterbacks and the not starting caliber guys is bigger than most people realize. Giants and Steelers and Browns, for example, makes up 1/3 of the league. Cardinals w/out Murray=1 win.

I think that is an argument, but I don’t know if it is the best argument— the ultimate reason why Arizona didn’t make the playoffs in 2024 came down to the defense giving up 36 points to a 3-win Panthers team. The offense was top 11 but you wanted more, sure.

@blakemurphy7 One could argue he was a major part of the reason last seasons team didn’t make the playoffs. Stats improved in the second half of the season when the games were meaningless. Respectfully, Until he proves he can finish a season strong, nothing has been proven to “work”.

In the end, I think it’s pretty clear that this year is the pivotal year. Anything short of the playoffs birth with Kyler playing the majority of the season and you are probably going to be looking at moving on. Year to year league.

For example, if you look at the threshold being something like Alex Smith, both the Niners and the Chiefs decided that they could and needed to do better. If the threshold is something like top seven QB play consistently, and if that’s the need, yeah you are gonna have issues!.

Cleared the threshold, yes. Look at everything from performance to stats and you can see that he’s a QB who can get you to the playoffs. It’s the level of play and if you are or can be content with that (and the cost in a few years too) that’s the question for this season.

That I think is part of the secret sauce where you can see how some of the teams that did manage to beat Tom Brady and the Pat were able to do it— great coordinators, but also a lot of defensive talent upfront. Very cool. And why Commanders got torched by Vic.

As far as but Safety, it’s where you were able to have 1/2 of the field be one coverage and the other half of the field is a different coverage where you are able to keep respect to the run game w/ coverages and can bring a safety down. No safety needed in run support with Vic.

Bonus points when you recognize that it’s defensive playcalling here as the sauce as well. Mastery of defense.

I was listening to Cooper DeJean & Reed Blankenship’s podcast, and in talking about Vic Fangio they made the point that they couldn’t remember a time in the 2nd half of the year where they played split safety vs the run. That is the secret sauce of a great coordinator, not design.
