The Maputo Protocol guarantees comprehensive rights to women, including the right to take part in political processes, to social and political equality, improved autonomy in their reproductive health decisions, and an end to harmful traditional practices.

In July 2003, the Protocol on Women’s Rights to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights was adopted by African Heads of State in Maputo, Mozambique. This document is famously known as the ‘Maputo Protocol’.

The theme of the conference was ‘Marching Forward on Gender Justice in Nigeria: From promise to progress – Advancing the implementation of the Maputo Protocol’.

On March 25th, I gave the Keynote Address at a conference organised by Christian AID Nigeria, Center LSD and the Side by Side Movement.

For two days, we listened to inspiring stories of courage, faith, resilience, set-backs and triumphs. We are all responsible for defining our dreams and it is important to build a network of personal and professional support to manage all the inevitable pitfalls.

The theme for this year was ‘Living the Dream’ and I was asked to moderate the opening plenary. The conference sessions covered personal ethics, leadership case studies, financial literacy, legacy building, entrepreneurship and other important topics.

The conference this year attracted over 600 women (and a few men) from across Africa and the Diaspora.

I attended this year’s International Women’s Leadership Conference in Dubai. This is an annual conference that started in 2022, and is convened by a dear sister and friend, Mrs @IbukunAwosika.

As I have done over the years, I will continue to do whatever I can to ensure that women and girls live lives of dignity and respect.

It is important for us to take stock of what we have been able to do and what we can still do to ensure that these global convenings mean something in the lives of ordinary women.
