One of my biggest issues with academia is that the reward for being incompetent at service is less service, and the reward for being good at service is more service, which can lead to unequal (+ very often gendered) service distributions. Any tips for dealing with this?!

My undergrads often have no idea about what I do, other than pop up to gives lectures once a week. My postgrads, who want to get into academia, aren't always well informed about what that means either. So I started drafting this. What say you, #AcademicTwitter? What'd I miss?

Has humanity actually progressed from Rags to Riches? Chris McCormack from @RTW_Aus provides #VicBioCon21 a thought provoking alternative narrative - 'Riches to Rags'. Maybe human 'progress' has actually been a fall from nature. ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿ“ฒ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ @VicBioCon

Minda Murray on using Indigenous names for species at #VicBioCon21 โ€˜every time you use language you insert a bit of culture back into the landscapeโ€™. Letโ€™s do it! Learn local Indigenous names for the species you work with, use them, and keep culture alive! ๐Ÿ—ฃ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿฆœ๐ŸฆŽ @VicBioCon

Minda Murray, proud Yorta Yorta and Duduroa woman, reminds us that people are key. We canโ€™t manage country without people. This is a common thread, which we have repeatedly heard at #VicBioCon21 today. Letโ€™s remember that for conservation to succeed, we need people! @VicBioCon

Q: Are Australiaโ€™s current laws working to protect threatened biodiversity? A: No. The very important question is, where to from here? #VicBioCon21 @VicBioCon

Australia's biodiversity laws might look good on paper but aren't being implemented well - we need more๐Ÿ’ฐ, outcomes delivered โœ…, inclusion of Traditional knowledgeโ—, Climate Change and cumulative impacts considered and NOT undermining by ministerial discretion #VicBioCon21

Great suggestion from @EuanRitchie1 for improving urban biodiversity: letโ€™s convert our gardens and nature strips to native habitat! No more lawn mowing, yay! ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸฆŽ#VicBioCon21

We are reminded by @EuanRitchie1 that the best conservation science will only take us so far. Investing energy in communicating our work and influencing policy is crucial. Remember to tell your conservation stories ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿจ Find your mentors and encourage others #VicBioCon21

Our first plenary @EuanRitchie1 knows that working in conservation can be confronting and evokes ALL the emotions ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿฅฐ but reminds us that there are good people doing wonderful things! ๐Ÿ˜ Can't wait to hear from more of these good people over the two days of #VicBioCon21
