It wouldn't be possible to have a texture of that size with that many colors, but using the magic of the ✨Combiner✨, we can make this fancy looking fruit! follow for more graphics tricks that would have been useful 30 years ago

Unfortunately, using vertex colors means this model can't have dynamic lighting, but Kaze was chill about it and found a very cool workaround.

Using the N64's combiner (a basic shading engine), I replace the values on the texture with colors. I tell the game to fill the entire texture with yellow, then fill the transparent (black) pixels with red. This basically replaces black/white with red/yellow.

To get around this limitation, I used the greyscale texture on the left for the apple. It is 32x128, which means it only takes up half the texture memory for this material and supports up to 256 shades of grey. It uses a format that interprets black pixels as transparency.

on the N64, a full 32-bit color texture can be at most 32x32 pixels. The console handles textures up to 64x128, but as the resolution increases, you can have fewer and fewer colors; 256, then 16, then only greyscale values, the largest texture being limited to 16 shades of grey.
