1/9 My chapter in this book ed by @aljhlester looks at a monument, which in plain sight in London captures a moment of British violence in China: a Royal Marine bayonetting a Chinese soldier.

My latest Archive pick for @chinabksreview is Peking Picnic, a 1930s novel of manners featuring evocative descriptions of Old Beijing and timeless observations about what it means to be an expat in China. Also smoking. Lots and lots of smoking.

F. Hagger was an Electrical Artificer in the (British) Royal Navy in the 1930s, serving on H.M.S. Medway on the China Station. The well captioned photographs document the ship's trip out east and stopovers in Weihai, Hong Kong, Yantai and Shanghai โ›ต see https://t.co/DW6xOXvFTy
