These points represent a tiny handful of problems that beset the bill, many of which are simply not resolvable. We would urge MSPs to vote against it at Stage 3 if - as we feel they should - they have doubts as to unintended consequences for the vulnerable.

10. Bill supporters on the health committee also opposed an amendment to require a referral to an independent assessor if a family member, caregiver or friend of an individual has concerns about coercion.

9. An amendment to require assessments by psychiatrists and social workers before a person is deemed eligible for assisted death was voted down, as was an amendment to require that patients speak with an expert on their illness or condition.

8. There is no institutional opt out for hospices, hospitals, hostels and other institutions that may not wish to facilitate assisted deaths on their premises for moral or philosophical reasons. Moves to secure such an exemption have been opposed.

6. Proponents of the bill have opposed moves aimed at securing in-depth data recording on assisted deaths, including the reasons a person gives for ending their life, and any complications that occur.

5. Moves to prevent people from accessing assisted death if they are known to be motivated by other factors than their terminal illness - chronic loneliness, or inadequate housing, for example - were opposed.

4. A majority of committee MSPs opposed an amendment to require that honest information be given to patients about the assisted death process. Evidence shows that deaths can be prolonged and painful, yet applicants wouldn't be told this.

3. Amendments to ensure palliative care support is in place for those considering assisted suicide were voted down, as were moves aimed at ensuring proper support for disabled Scots. Inequality is one factor that could push a person towards assisted death.

2. The committee considering the bill supported an amendment by its sponsor, Liam McArthur, to allow doctors to raise the option of assisted death with their patients. We think this is deeply unethical.

🧵The Holyrood assisted suicide bill is not being improved at Stage 2. Here's why. 1. Experts warn that the bill's eligibility criteria are dangerously broad but moves to better define its scope by, for example, requiring a prognosis of 6 months or less were voted down.

Holyrood's health committee has just agreed an amendment that would allow medics to raise the option of assisted suicide with their patients, should a law be introduced in Scotland. A deeply concerning move.

We would urge MSPs to consider the long list of amendments that have been rejected so far, on a wide range of concerns. These issues are not likely to be revisited in full, or in any great depth, at stage 3.

The last time a bill of this kind was considered at Holyrood, a special, balanced committee was established, advised by an independent ethical expert. Recognising the gravity of the issues it raises. No such provision has been made this time round.

The committee is racing through complex questions related to a bill that would be of profound moral, social and legal consequence, should it become law. The bill also raises issues of legislative competence - for example on lethal substances, and conscience rights.

Holyrood's health committee disposed of more than a hundred amendments in its morning session on Liam McArthur's assisted suicide bill today. And it will dispose of more amendments this evening, in an unusual second sitting. This is concerning.

More than 1,400 amendments have been lodged to the assisted suicide bill since it was brought to Westminster. Surely a sign that this legislation is seriously - and in our view fundamentally - flawed. It must go. https://t.co/J7sNXVCNpU
