The first reason is to focus the public’s attention on a far fetched scenario that doesn’t require much change to their business models. Addressing the immediate impacts of AI on labor, privacy, or the environment is costly. Protecting against AI somehow “waking up” is not.

The second is to try to convince everyone that AI is very, very powerful. So powerful that it could threaten humanity! They want you to think we’ve split the atom again, when in fact they’re using human training data to guess words or pixels or sounds.

Bravo @rcalo for speaking truth to power/wealth/lies Our noble work is to repair the immediate harms and stop the blue sky futurists who have taken over media attention

Have a look at the prescient lecture on "algorithmic accountability" @benbendc gave for @harvard_data and @RadInstitute back in 2018--he saw the future and had (has!) good suggestions! We *can* use AI safely. Up to us, though. 2/2

The sooner we understand that there is no such thing as artificial intelligence, the sooner we’ll start managing our new technology intelligently, the computer scientist Jaron Lanier writes.

There are ways of controlling the new technology—but first we have to stop mythologizing it.

I'm thrilled that EMNLP 2023 has a track for Human-Centered NLP. This is how I've been self-identifying of late, which has led to a number of confusions and conversations. I'm not an authority, but thought it might be useful to share this experience. I'd love your thoughts! 1/7

We just published a very interesting debate between @benbendc and @michael_muller consisting of a series of e-mail exchanges on the topic of anthropomorphism in human-centered AI systems with commentary by @PattieMaes and Susan Brennan. https://t.co/d7I4vdG71P Enjoy the debate!
