Ida Cook, one of the opera-loving sisters who helped Jews escape from Germany, died 22 Dec 1986. Living at 24 Morella Rd, they worked as civil servants until Ida’s career as a Mills & Boon author helped fund a flat in Dolphin Square which served as a ‘clearing house’ for refugees

9 November 1900 saw the first ever meeting of Battersea Borough Council, replacing the Battersea Vestry. The progressive new council introduced electricity via a generating station in Lombard Road; funded the Nine Elms Baths in Cringle & oversaw the opening of St James’ Hospital

On Nov 3 1965 Up the Junction was broadcast as part of the BBC series The Wednesday Play. Adapted from Nell Dunn’s novel and directed by Ken Loach it told, with unflinching honesty, the story of three young working-class women living in Battersea.

20 Oct 1940 a devastating bombing raid took place over Battersea High Street destroying Battersea High Street Station. Incendiary bombs engulfed the wooden station in fire. The few burnt out remains were left until the 1950s, but the station never reopened.

The WWI memorial in Battersea Park was unveiled 4 Oct 1924 commemorating the British infantry 24th Division which served on the Western Front & lost 4865 men.This was the first public commission for war artist Eric Kennington who worked for free & paid £300 for the Portland Stone

Arch 42 was opened on 19 September 2021. This created a public walking way between the new Northern Line tube stations, Wandsworth Road, New Covent Garden Market, Nine Elms Lane and the River Thames for the first time in over 150 years.

6 Sept 2018 the Grand Hall of Battersea Arts Centre officially reopened after the devastating fire of March 2015. This was the first day of a 5 month Phoenix Season celebrating its reopening, thanking all those who had helped to restore it.

On 23 August 1950 an electric tram on Cedars Road lost control, derailed & crashed making the left turn into Lavender Hill. The driver was trapped in the wreckage & two passengers were injured. This was the last of a number of incidents on this steep stretch

20 Aug 1944 Brian Barnes was born. He trained at Ravensbourne & the RCA. A gifted artist, he created murals in south London for over 45 yrs. Barnes lived & worked in Carey Gardens, was a leading light in the community arts movement & campaigned to preserve Battersea Power Station

21 July 1890 ‘new’ Battersea Bridge was opened by future Prime Minister Lord Rosebery. The old timber bridge was considered an obstruction to shipping & replaced by Bazalgette’s stone design. At only 40 feet wide it is now London's narrowest surviving road bridge over the Thames.
