From the shadows near the entrance to the tent, Azriel said, as if in answer to some unspoken debate, “I’m getting her back.”

“It’s real,” Azriel said softly. Neither laughed or commented on the burning in my eyes. I took another drink to wash away the tightness in my throat & approached them. “Let’s not do this again for another five hundred years,” I said a bit hoarsely

Cassian cast the memory aside as Rhys surveyed Elain, his violet-blue eyes missing nothing. “What happened.” Elain waved a hand in dismissal before flinging open the veranda doors & striding into the open air. “Elain,” Rhys said as he & Cassian trailed her into the dying light.

Cassian surveyed her. Gazed into her eyes and breathed, “Beautiful.”

“Pick one,” Rhys whispered in my ear. “A glowworm?” He nipped at my earlobe. “Smartass.” He steered me back toward the wall of crowns, each wholly different ... “Pick whichever crown you like.” “I can’t just—take one.” “You most certainly can. They belong to you.”

The wrappings around my hands were now mere smudges of soot. Cassian’s upraised palms remained before me—ready to take the blow, if I needed to make it. “I’m all right,” he said quietly. Gently.

Here comes bat boy number two.

“She is my mate. And my spy,” I said too quietly. “And she is the High Lady of the Night Court.”

Azriel mastered himself enough to say, “Thank you.” I'd never seen his hazel eyes so bright, the hues of green amid the brown and gray like veins of emerald. “This will be invaluable.” “Prick,” Cassian said, but laughed again.
