I just really like Samwise, to me he is the most heroic and virtuous of everyone in LOTR, On the other hand I like Sauron for being evil and domineering he forces the gears of the story to move. They become the pillars on which I judge and define the actions of other characters.

Whether its grimdark, dark fantasy or high fantasy. I think every setting needs an irredeemable evil and a virtuous good to serve as moral anchors, shades of gray can’t exist without black and white. Characters will get too dull and samey when everyone is a blob of gray.
