Hey look: Toronto just got the six-month report from the non-police Community Crisis Support Team pilot and 78% of calls were diverted without involving police. Imagine if we gave that a $50 million raise. Instead, it's an increase of maybe $3 million*.
*I think: it's a 25% increase, the Star said last year that startup was $2.5m and there was $8.5m in operating costs last year. Not sure if the raise is on all of that so I was generous and included the full $11m. But I wouldn't be surprised if it's less.

Wait, you mean mental health professionals and those suffering from mental illness knew what they were talking about when they said police presence makes the situation worse due to escalating and causing fear? Who could've seen this coming? /s

Unfortunately, the police are the ones every one calls when thereโs a situation, and theyโve been having to try to be everything to everybody. I know some PSs are integrating mental health professionals in their calls.

I'm a crisis worker in US. I am not allowed to carry a weapon, have no authority to arrest or even hospitalize. Been hung. Shot at. Teeth knocked out. Thrown over a ravine. Had knives pulled on me. Trust me - police are needed on these calls!
