anyway. i will continue to love hockey and to be in hockey and to do so while being my whole authentic, undocumented, mexican, lesbian self. because i deserve to live. idc what anyone else says. i deserve to be alive and to continue to exist in the places that made me.

but my feelings are no longer helpless or hopeless. and i hope everyone who reads this whether ally, immigrant, or children of immigrants gets to have that change of feeling as well.

geno has always been my favorite player. i practically learned english alongside him from the other side of the country. i think about how he felt during his big migration. anxious, scared, excited. all things i feel now because i know my communities has me and i have them.

hockey, like all sports and all facets of life, thrives because of immigration. and i think about geno's story often and my own story and the stories of the people around me and how that has shaped the people we are today. the homes and loves we build.

for full transparency, this piece was written out of anger and bitterness a few days after the inauguration after the detainments ramped up in my hometown and i was bedridden. i felt helpless and hopeless and i think this piece reflects that a little too much. but.

you are needed in the community more than your money is needed in the pockets of another legal aid org.

i know the fed gov has done a lot more that we have to worry about but if all the cuts to the national forest service leads to the cutting of bear week i will do things that aren’t even on wikipedias yet.
