As someone who realized how powerful a Maths degree is only in 1999 in my third year in Ife, and subsequently made a lot of good out of it - I can tell you that the course is one of the best first degrees in the world that sets you up for any career direction you want.

With a passable communication skill, this person will be fine. Consulting companies will snatch such person. But if they can’t communicate at all, it is tough. And they may be better suited to going the academic way.

Imagine this person being mentored to become a data scientist. It should be easy. The questions to ask though. Do they have good communication skills? Are they one of those who only passed Maths courses but can’t string together any coherent sentence?

They will easily pass tests. They will do quickly pick up software development skills. If they want to, they can become accountants. They will get fully sponsored PhD admissions abroad. They can do almost anything. But again, it is about them even knowing the power they wield.

One of the most important things in life is access to information and proximity to the right people. A first class Maths graduate should not even find themselves teaching if they don’t want to. They will be shortlisted for most entry level opportunities in any sector…. (Contd)
