Happy to share that my first first-author paper is out @TheLancet! . Here, we present a case of PMO, a striking neurological condition of visual perception that causes faces to appear distorted, and the first photorealistic visualizations of how these distortions are seen.

Want to learn what striking visual distortions can reveal about how vision works? Come see my poster tomorrow morning in the Pavilion! "Visual perceptual distortions reveal an object-centered reference frame for faces and a stimulus-centered reference frame for hands". #vss2025

A mysterious neurological condition called prosopometamorphopsia, or PMO, makes faces look grotesque—and sheds new light on the inner workings of the brain. @shayla__love reports.

When Victor Sharrah woke up one morning he saw demons everywhere he looked. Thanks to the excellent Victor and @avmello_ for speaking to me about this rare Kafkaesque condition - prosopometamorphopsia - which distorts how faces appear. My story for @AFP:.

We hope these visualizations help convey the severity of the distortions in PMO and the need for effective treatments. If you know someone who's experienced facial distortions, he'd love to hear more: .

Because of this, we could use a procedure that allowed him to compare a face seen in person with its photo on a screen. We modified this photo in real time until it matched his perception. More about the procedure and the case here (3 min):.

PMO is extremely rare, with fewer than a hundred cases reported, and it can affect the shape, texture, position, and color of faces. This patient's case, however, is even more unusual: every face seen in real life appears distorted, but not faces seen on a screen or on paper!.
