As a former coach (wrestling), I can say that the more you expect of your students the more they deliver. The reverse is also true, low expectation leads to low progress. What is @SFUnified thinking?
I finally got the public records request back. SF Public Schools (@SFUnified) paid $182,000 to a consultant, while already in a deficit, to implement “grading for equity". The advice: make 41% a passing grade, and stop grading homework. Equity achieved.

San Francisco schools is trying its absolute hardest to make sure all middle income families who could move out of the city do so right away “Grading for Equity” is going to be a real disaster and I guess this is a boon for SF private schools and Burlingame housing prices

The only time I've ever been instructed to hold in a jet for real was when I asked for it for practice purposes! Of course I never flew an airliner.

Large space telescopes shouldn't need to be thought of as 30 year projects.

PFAS-free is a big deal in semiconductors. Getting rid of “forever chemicals” seems like a clear win, right? Turns out it’s probably greenwashing: 🧵1/10

If Starship is eventually successful, we need to rethink many assumptions about what is possible in space because the cost of sending stuff up will be greatly reduced. I'm looking forward to this!

Good news, additional tracking by @LeoLabs_Space has now ruled out the potential collision of Gravity Probe B and the CZ-2D rocket body!

If there is a collision, not only would it cause an enormous amount of space debris, but it would be a sad ending for GP-B!

GP-B had a rotating quartz sphere enclosed in the spacecraft, which thrusted to keep the sphere from touching the walls. The axis of rotation of the sphere precessed in accordance with general relativity due to the mass of the Sun "dragging" the inertial frame. Amazing!

Tomorrow at 11:51:54.767 UTC there will be a close conjunction between a defunct rocket body and the Gravity Probe B spacecraft. Total mass involved is over 7000kg so not good if they hit. GP-B is one of my favorite spacecraft as it verified general relativistic frame dragging!

I'll take 4 great engineers working together under a great leader any day over 100 average engineers working under an average manager.

If asteroid 2024 YR4 hits the Moon in 2032, the 10 Megaton blast will make a crater about 1.5km in diameter, bigger than Meteor Crater in Arizona (shown here). That's about a billion tons of rock tossed out of the crater. Not a good day for an astronaut on the Moon!

Asteroid 2024 YR4 still has a 4.1% chance of hitting the Moon on Dec 22, 2032. The @NASA JWST is scheduled to attempt more observations in a few months, which are likely to reduce the orbit uncertainty and increase those odds.

The old adage "pull on stick houses get smaller, push on stick and houses get larger" doesn't work when you are upside down. Instead you have to think about which way you are pulling the nose.

On ISS7, we tried to make wine (Kvass) by adding black bread to juice and letting it ferment. Several weeks later all we had was mushy grape juice. Turns out the bread had been sterilized for packaging, so no live yeast! #ISSScience

A new "mini-moon" of Earth discovered. It isn't in orbit around the Earth, but in Solar orbit near Earth. Of note, the B612 Precovery service was used to find additional observations to refine the orbit. Such mini moons are great targets for missions since they hang around near
