Fantastic review of Russian Gothic in @nytimes! “Russian Gothic is a powerfully airless, demented little book whose fever proceeds with unbearable lucidity, both of prose and of mind.” @rhaliterary @FlandersLit @oldstpublishing @rarebirdlit @MissAdaDoom https://t.co/44VV29mVNW

The 1991 novel turns a private disturbance into bracing social commentary.

Censorship is as grave an illness as idiocy. And like idiocy, it knows no borders. It does not belong to dictatorships alone—it thrives in the world that calls itself free.

The story on which my novel Cocaine is based was never published in the Soviet Union due to censorship. My former Dutch publisher later attempted—unsuccessfully—to censor the novel in translation. Today, Meta censors communication about the book and has restricted my account.

A book about my son — his abduction and murder in 2002 near Moscow. It broke me, but let me give voice to his pain and loneliness on his last night. The Dutch edition now has its face: the final cover. Off to print. @rhaliterary @FlandersLit

My son would have had his birthday today. This photo of him, taken by my youngest brother Lesha long ago at my son’s grandparents’ in Batumi (Georgia), survived a fire, and it survived the winter in a burned-out house without a roof, under rain and snow—a harsh Belarusian winter.
