We aren't perfect and got this tweet wrong. We recognise in light of new evidence that the use of 'arguably' is not at all necessary at this point. https://t.co/iGHMEIhg9q

This is why deplatforming without mercy is the solution, and why Twitter under Musk's open tolerance (arguably encouragement) of far right hatred and denialism is so profoundly dangerous. This platform is cooked and there's a reason we (mostly) stopped tweeting.

Historians should not be quiet about the Holocaust and the danger of denialism. Righteous anger is entirely appropriate. But we need to do it in a way that doesn't bring these ideas and their proponents out of the shadows and help them reach wider audiences.

If 95% of people agree with your scathing rebuttal, then they're fine with that, because the other 5% of people who see it represents a way bigger audience than they were otherwise going to reach. If you're on stage debating a Nazi, they already won.

It doesn't matter how absurd or easily debunked or mocked these claims are, because the goal is coalesce and publicise otherwise completely marginal political communities that otherwise struggle to grow.

Simultaneously, it means that historians can never have constructive conversations with denialists, because they are not playing by the same rules and assumptions. You can't have a meaningful historical discussion if you don't accept the historical method.

The goal of denialists is therefore not to convince the informed through reason and analysis, but to give people who already at least partly agree with them an excuse to hold and spread hateful ideas. To sow doubt and distrust among those who aren't sure about it all.

Denialism functions by denying the validity of the historical record, through recourse to conspiracies of impossible scale and scope. As if Jews were somehow able to not just coordinate each and every survivor's testimony, but also fabricate perpetrators' own records.

What's important to remember is that denialism isn't (just) about saying 'Holocaust didn't happen'. It's a denial of the historical method. That is, that we can learn more about the past through consulting and analysing the sources the past left behind.

Our position was laid out in Slate in 2018, which advocated for no tolerance moderation when it comes to denialism on social media. A pipedream on today's Twitter but it works. Our forum is free of it while still hosting a lot of Holocaust content. https://t.co/ETDUifTmfG

They aren’t arguing an actual side. They’re not “just asking questions” out of curiosity or ignorance. Don’t give them the chance.

We have a lot of institutional experience of dealing with Holocaust denialism on the internet. Mid-2010s Reddit had *problems*. Today seems to be a day in which that experience is useful. And no, we're not linking the reasons why, because Rule 1 is No, Don't Link That Shit.
