Relatives of both DiStefano and Gallegos were at the press conference. They spoke to reporters, urging anyone who might recognize the detail about the distinctive towel to come forward. The towel was bundled inside the shower curtain, seen here wrapped around DiStefano's body.

Detectives suspected a connection in the DiStefano and Gallegos cases back in 1982. They weren't able to prove it for almost 30 years, when advances it ballistic science revealed the bullets in both cases were fired from the same gun.

DiStefano, 14, had left home headed for a party a few weeks before her remains were discovered. She'd disappeared just a few days after another young woman, 21-year-old Joyce "Tina" Gallegos, was found dead in Ogden Canyon. Both had been shot in the head.

But investigators in Weber County, Utah are hoping someone will recognize the specific detail about a hotel/motel that used to mark room numbers on towels. They held a press conference today and released that detail publicly for the first time.

A yellow shower curtain and a white towel, marked "apartment 15." These were found wrapped around the body of Gabriel DiStefano when a construction crew unearthed her remains in September of 1982. Her case remains unsolved and the evidence has disappeared.
