Here is an excerpt from my new book.

“Humanistic conceptions of ‘critical literacy’ set the stage for rethinking what this term means in our posthuman world…& as meanings and capabilities of computational agents shift, so too must our ideas about what it means to be ‘critically literate.’” #edu800fall24 #Leander

Q: Who wrote the text and what was their motivation? AI Q: Who built the computational agent(s), why and how do they operate? Q: How do power and privilege operate in the text? AI Q: How do/can we intra-act with computational agents to create texts? #edu800fall24 #Leander

“AI image recognition has become so ubiquitous that we neither see it operating nor consider how it functions as a special machine form of ‘vision’.” How too might AI in as a co-writer become so ubiquitous that we don’t even consider it operating? #edu800fall24 #Leander

Schools tend to have Ss work on separate things in one medium at a time. This is in opposition to how Ss interact in the world. How can Ts encourage Ss to work with multiple media types across various online spaces? #edu800fall24 #Knobel

New Literacies Research have found that “young people ‘pull’ on available resources - content, materials, people - when they are working on something. By contrast, schools ‘push’ content.” What do Ts do help S to pull resources? #edu800fall24 #Knobel

New Literacies Research has found that “Schools approach knowledge in terms of consuming information and practicing teacher-taught strategies…rather than in terms of production by insiders to a field and novices learning to become insiders.” #edu800fall24 #knobel

@aschoenborn @writingproject In my practice, students are expected to prompt AI for commands to achieve desired outcomes. This fosters creativity and encourages them to explore new ways to express their ideas. #edu800fall24 #Mills

@aschoenborn We could bridge the gap by speaking to their interests! We could introduce a topic with traditional print and have them explore digital sources that are of interest to them that apply to the topic. EX: Using Roblox for programming

In a study of ELA digital literacies, #Leu encourages ELA teachers to “combine traditional print literacies with newer digital literacies to…strengthen student learning.” How might this bridge the gap between “school learning” and “real-world learning”? #edu800fall24

To increase digital literacy, #Leu suggests “that teachers become better acquainted with online literacies and the lives of their students.” What is one way for teachers, like me, who have been in the field for 24 yrs become acquainted with Ss digital lives? #edu800fall24

The role of educators is changing. #Leu argues that although teaching are integrating technology they are “failing to integrate technology and content learning.” What are the implications of their study? Is tech used as a critical literacy? #edu800fall24

In their work with Digital Literacies, #Mills recognizes concerns about muliliteracies blending with multimodal contexts. Are they different or similar? #edu800fall24

In their Digital Literacies study, #Mills acknowledges that what has become defined as “New Literacy Studies” has come to “accept more fuzzy borders.” How have you seen this in your practice and has the term “literacy” become to broadly defined? #edu800fall24 @writingproject
