my number one writing tip related to this that helps me (as someone who is not a writer per se, i only really write when inspiration strikes) is that you need to be reading your prose out loud. if it sounds weird to say, it probably sounds weird to someone else reading it
apparently people are discoursing about writing, so here's the writing advice i've personally found most useful (usually credited to gary provost)

nothing pisses me off faster than editing my own fic and realizing that i switched tenses at any point of time, and now i have to go back and fix it all 😭 like. why did i do that !!
i love fic writers with all my heart and i would never point this out directly to any of them of course - but nothing makes me click out of a fic faster than the tense changing every sentence 😭
