He passed away peacefully in his sleep, aged 90. Canon McAllister was ordained to the priesthood in 1955.

It is said that he believed himself unworthy to be crucified on a cross similar to Christ, so died on a 'saltire' ( an X-shaped cross) which became his symbol.
