Studying philosophy means I don't need to have an informed take on every new thing. Sorry, I can't form an opinion about anything of contemporary relevance until I figure out this unresolved question from the 12th century. That will make all the difference.

In philosophy, if you say X is Y and they reply that X is not Y, you can just say “X is Y-adjacent.” They will not challenge you and it’s not illegal or immoral. This is the only strategy I used to get through my PhD.

Since I am announcing things: W.W. Norton will be publishing The Tower and the Ruin, my book on J.R.R. Tolkien, in spring 2024 (so it seems I need to finish it before then). We've just started working together, but thus far I love my editor and how Norton treats their authors!
