A pioneer in Brazil in the study and application of animal welfare, Mateus was a national reference, named four times (2013–2016) by Revista Dinheiro Rural as one of the 100 most influential people in agribusiness.

He coordinated the ETCO Group, focused on Ethology and Animal Ecology, with over 120 scientific articles published. Between 2009 and 2010, he was a visiting researcher at FAO (Rome) and served on the Animal Welfare Committee of the European Commission, DG Sanco, in Brussels.

After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in Animal Welfare at the University of Cambridge (1999), he became an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the School of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences at UNESP, Jaboticabal campus.

Mateus J. R. Paranhos da Costa was an animal scientist (UNESP, 1981), a specialist in animal behavior (USP, 1986), held a master’s degree in Animal Science (UNESP), and a PhD in Psychobiology from USP (1995).

If Brazil is recognized as a leader in animal welfare, much of it is due to his persistence, his keen observation, his contributions, and his kind and humane way of speaking to everyone.

Obituary Notice. With sorrow, we announce the passing of Mateus José Paranhos da Costa. His legacy lives on in every researcher trained by the Etco Group at UNESP in Jaboticabal, São Paulo, as well as in every study conducted, and in every article, book, interview, and report.
