However, the Soviet Union never reformed its economy to become competitive with the United States, and it never gained significant access to the oceans, i.e. global trade markets. Therefore the Soviets never posed a serious geopolitical threat to the US.

In terms of the Cold War, the Soviet Union did pose a threat to the Anglosphere if they took over mainland Europe, which Stalin was planning on doing but Hitler thwarted this with Barbarossa. Which makes a lot of sense considering Stalin started rearming immediately after the war

Whoever controls the Oceans controls the World, and the US has exercised full control over the World's oceans since the total destruction and capitulation of the Japanese Navy in 1945. The Nazis never developed naval power so the US simply took over the British naval regime
