D2C consumer hardware is having its moment again
We were promised there would be "an app for that" and for a while, it felt true. But open app stores gradually gave way to the same few default apps and platforms - built by a handful of companies, for billions of people at once. Essential Apps start from a different belief:

One thought provoking idea: Software supply becomes fluid as agents (1) observe new need (2) search existing OSS (3) patch/extend them (4) upstream the change and then (5) reuse it So in theory some bespoke SaaS collapses into just-in-time sw assembly from evolving OS library

“The first version of a new technology is a toy”
A super interesting new study from Harvard Business Review. A 8-month field study at a US tech company with about 200 employees found that AI use did not shrink work, it intensified it, and made employees busier. Task expansion happened because AI filled in gaps in knowledge,

Good interview w/ @benedictevans on @stratechery We’re in the scaffolding window and aggregation theory provides a theory for why some sw co’s survive Along the lines of “What’s slowing co’s down isn’t model intelligence, it’s how agents are built + run in their orgs” @OpenAI

If there’s a SaaS meltdown will there be a domain url meltdown? Like paying $70M for https://t.co/rNmXixouQW is cool and all but does the value hold?

One big assumption with the software meltdown is that agents won’t require regular-ish human input. Jenson’s comment around end to end tool use holds in this ‘in-between phase’ as the scaffolding for automation is being built But GUI disintermediation is real and nice to have is

Half life of culture keeps shrinking but conversely, the arbitrators of taste are inherently more longitudinal in nature (music / design prime examples). The importance of taste/intuition matters more than ever and design-principled people should be valued like critical infra

"More code will be written this year than the last decade" Assuming written = generated/drafted (including throwaway) it’s actually plausible...some math -> Lines of code / year ≈ D × h × r × W D = # developers (20M devs) h = hours/day AI-assisted coding r = drafted code
