Oh oh. It's happened just as everyone said it would. Pitch to editor ignored. A month later, a piece is published strongly resembling my pitch, written in-house by said editor.
That's MY NAME on the cover of
@TelegraphTravel
! Go & buy it, & if you don't my mum will probably aggressively wave it in your face when out on her dog walk.
A PR got in touch to see if I was interested in hearing about a new hotel, then asked for a confirmed commission before sharing info about said mystery hotel. Ah yes, bear with me while I pitch 'a new hotel is opening. That's it. Is my angle strong enough?'
3 publications in the past week have told me they 'accept' contributions from freelancers, but they can't pay. In no other industry would this be okay.
I got 4 big rejections yesterday but the editors took the time to get back to me & were all so nice that I don't mind at all. More editors like this please!
I know I'm on holiday BUT... I've been SHORTLISTED for Young Travel Writer of the Year! Drinking all the Uzbek beers, omg, the 'young' is just the cherry on the cake.
@travelmediawrds
Editors putting compliments in your copy as well as changes is so appreciated. 'This is fabulous'. HOORAY, THANK YOU, now I'll work hard on the red pen.
There's nothing worse than typos getting added IN to your work post submission.
It makes writers look sloppy, but then I check the copy I've submitted & voilà, the typos have been added in during the editing process.
I accept I'm speaking from a position of privilege, but travel writers, we need to fly less. All too often I see posts about people hopping on their 50th flight of the year, we know better than this in 2023 🚂
At the risk of my Twitter just being me blowing my own 🎺, I've been shortlisted for
#AITO
's Young Travel Writer of the Year 2023! If only trains were cheaper & rates higher so I could go to all these fun awards ceremonies.
I'm off to the big bad smoke to find out if I've won Young Writer of the Year at the
@travelmediawrds
! This is my first 'work' event & I don't get out of l'Hexagone much, so please hang out with me. 🤞editors are less scary IRL than I imagine them over email.
Contributing to a
@lonelyplanet
guide was a pipe dream when I moved to France almost 3 years ago, but here are the 2 chapters that I wrote for the 2024 guide 😍
@TravWriters
Yesterday I submitted a manuscript for an entire guidebook. Two years in France & I've written my own BOOK. Anyway, I have written a lot of words of late, so I'm going off grid. A real holiday where the only things I write are postcards. Open for commissions again from mid-Sept!
Turning down press trips to places like the Maldives makes me question my sanity a little, but... I'm a francophile now folks. Oui to French press trips, non to long haul flights for short breaks, however tempting it may be.
It's particularly lovely to be shortlisted for Young Writer of the Year by
@AITOHQ
for my feature on nuns in sustainable farming for SUITCASE, because I never got paid for this piece when the publication went into liquidation.
Seeing my name in print never gets old, & I could have easily given 200 reasons why you should visit France this year. Here's my spread in
@theipaper
at the weekend.
@TravWriters
@UK_AtoutFrance
I went to the
@BradtGuides
office today & met all the mysterious, scary editors who were neither mysterious nor scary. Look at all of these copies of

Everyone in travel writing has words they hate, 'hidden gem', 'bustling', but there is nothing, absolutely nothing, worse than major publications writing 'Lyons' instead of 'Lyon'.
It would be so easy to accept the exciting press trip offers to Canada, the Maldives & Scandinavia, but I'm really trying not to fly. Fun trips accessible by train in 🇫🇷 are my jam!
If you want to get really, truly off-the-beaten-track you should hit Armenia. I wrote about my thru-hike on
@theTCTrail
last summer for
@lonelyplanet
, & how to plan your own trip:
18 months ago, after losing Dad, I moved to France. This was the easiest piece to write & the hardest piece to share, but worth it to shout to the world about how great Dad was.
@TelegraphTravel
PRs that put you in touch with the right expert straight away & get back to you with answers to your questions on time are just gold dust & I love you guys.
SECOND BEST YOUNG WRITER OF THE YEAR!!! Plus what I looked like when I received the news.
Huge congrats to
@jacquiagate
for pipping me to the post a 2nd time this month, an extremely worthy winner 🏆
On the homepage of
@TelegraphTravel
today — have a read! I recommend the comments section, where one man says he'd rather holiday in Syria than France right now ;)
Delighted to have been shortlisted for TWO BGTW Members’ Excellence Awards, Travel Feature of the Year (Wider World) & Specialist Travel Feature of the Year! Merci beaucoup
@TravWriters
, I feel incredibly honoured.
Today, I will be insufferable. I will be insufferable because I am an AUTHOR &

I’m up for an award today!
@AITOHQ
’s Young Travel Writer of the Year for my feature on nuns in sustainable farming for SUITCASE Mag. The competition is stiff, but it’s an honour to be shortlisted.
@TravWriters
Kudos to
@lottiecgross
&
@worldlyadventur
for calling out the non-payers in Talking Travel Writing today. Shocking to see so many big publications on there!
Rounding off ‘awards I didn’t win’, I was shortlisted for Travel Feature of the Year at
#BGTWAwards2023
for my feature for
@TGOMagazine
on solo hiking the new
@theTCTrail
across Armenia. I’ll take 580km of solitude as a win anyway. Congrats to
@jessicagvincent
, a worthy winner!
This time last year I was solo hiking
@theTCTrail
across Armenia. It was the most challenging experience of my life. I wrote about it for
@lonelyplanet
Part of me misses the open trail, part of me is very happy to be with people this summer
@TravWriters
Editors are like buses, crickets for weeks and then BAM, they all email you on the same day (usually when you've sneaked away from your screen to go skiing).
Turning into a travel writer who barely travels. I've been camped out in Lyon for the best part of 2 months, but later this month I'll be in Paris and eastern France (Nancy/Metz etc.). Editors looking for Lyon/Paris/Alsace-Lorraine content, get in touch.
Yes, still France 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
What a dream to write about the 30 best holidays in France for
@TelegraphTravel
! No wonder I'm becoming so insular — this country has it all
@TravWriters
I'm going to keep shouting about this piece for
@BBC_Travel
because if you haven't heard of Eugénie Brazier, the first chef EVER to be awarded 6 Michelin stars, you should read it pronto. Big thanks to
@DrAnnieGray
& Maryann Tebben.
Friendly editors of Twitter, my May is looking light & I'd love to take on pieces (on France, bien sûr). You'll help me to fund a summer of Olympics, Taylor Swift & alpine hiking. Email in bio, merci!
I've never questioned my sanity quite so much as when I set off to solo hike 580kms across Armenia. The Transcaucasian Trail was a ride! Read my feature on it in the latest issue of
@TGOMagazine
@theTCTrail
When will I be enough of an adult to pay for a cabin on an overnight ferry? I've gone for the cheap option: drink 3 large glasses of wine & then roll around the floor in my sleeping bag all night.
@The_Fence_Mag
Took my lunch break at 9.30am in an (empty) meeting room. I had my sleeping bag with me because I'd stayed at a friend's. When my alarm went off to end nap time, I stuck my head out of my sleeping bag to find an audience: the finance team were conducting an interview
I'm delighted to have written about my favourite boozy Beaujolais run for
@dkeyewitness
! Order it here, your coffee table will be incomplete without it:
I'm working on a piece for The Independent & I'd love accommodation recommendations in Paris. Not interested in 5*, would prefer quirky/new/in arrondissements that see less footfall
#journorequest
Insta vs. reality:
Insta: I have a lovely life in France (it's true).
Reality: I'm currently stuck passportless in the UK with no idea when my next visa will come through, having spent £800 on two different visa applications, changing travel reservations & an immigration lawyer
Eugénie Brazier was the first person EVER to receive 6 Michelin stars. She didn't go to school, was an unmarried, single parent at 19 & was imprisoned by the Nazis during WW2. Why doesn't the world know about her? For
@BBC_Travel
@TravWriters
Really delighted to have been highly commended for my feature on Eugénie Brazier, the world's first 6* Michelin chef, for

. Thank you
@AnneBanas
for commissioning & superb edits, & to

for the recognition.

For
@IndyTravel
I wrote about how to get the French to like you.
I feel as though it's an open invite for all my French pals to tell me they actually hate me.
@TravWriters
Just got my 1st email from someone I don't know telling me how much they're enjoying
#PaddlingFrance

28 days & 580kms solo along the Armenian section of the
@theTCTrail
, a wild ride, more challenging than I could have ever imagined, & thoroughly worth it.
Before I started writing I assumed that editors would always send contributors a copy of the magazine. Now I often find that even getting a PDF of my feature is like getting blood out of a stone.
In the latest issue of
@TGOMagazine
, I put 3 sustainable outdoor clothing brands to the ultimate test: 4 weeks of sweat and dirt on
@theTCTrail
. Which performed better, the T-shirt made from seaweed, eucalyptus or castor bean oil?
For

I wrote about the most scenic train journeys in Europe. Plenty of reasons to opt for 🚆 > ✈ for your European summer adventure.
