I signed this letter as an acknowledgement of the hard work we have to do in academia and in our broader communities to address systemic issues of sexual misconduct.

It is the opportunity to work with amazing students like @Orson_Xu, who conducted very impactful research during his PhD and has received several awards recognizing this work, that energizes me and brings me so much joy! Congratulations Orson!

Many thanks to my students and other collaborators, to my mentors (@gabowd and the entire academic family) who helped me achieve this. Congratulations to my wonderful @UW_iSchool colleagues @wobbrockjo and Batya Friedman who were also recognized!

Scott was taken from his family and our community far too soon. He was an fearless advocate for our undergraduate students, and an amazing instructor. He will be deeply missed. I can't even begin to comprehend this loss.

Congratulations to all of our @UW_iSchool graduates! After a particularly challenging year and a half, I'm so proud of what you all have accomplished, and looking forward to what you will do! #iSchoolConvocation

This is the start, not the end. I welcome hearing about additional commitments I can take and that our communities can take to create real systemic change.

6: Working with the other major HCI groups across academia to improve the working environments at our institutions, and within our professional organizations (e.g., conferences); CS too, but I personally will have more traction within HCI

5: Treating students and post-docs with respect, sensitivity and understanding in all situations (yes, this should be a given)

4: Meeting with UW’s Title IX office to understand their track record, policies and practices around reporting, investigations, outcomes and accountability, and work to improve those as needed. (I call out that I am a mandatory reporter at UW.)

3: Explore iSchool faculty, staff and student policies and practices to root out and eliminate enabling behaviors and strengthen protective behaviors

2: Making these trainings available to students and post-docs (and required where allowed, i.e., union guidance)

1: Any faculty/staff accepting iSchool funds (travel, discretionary, research, professional development …) will be required to take sexual misconduct, diversity and allyship/bystander/advocacy training and workshops, regularly (*** while still respecting union contracts)

We can do better. We have to do better. In my role, I have both privilege and power. Here is what I commit to doing (borrowed liberally from colleagues):

Patterns of abuse and assault are obviously not limited to Michigan. They have occurred on every college campus, including my own. While I sincerely hope otherwise, I am not at all convinced that my university would have done better by these survivors.
