The same day @angelinaaking and I learned 5 men were charged with kidnapping Aiden Pleterski, we were sent a video of the 24-year-old visibly beaten. Pleterski confirmed it was recorded during the kidnapping, but said a lot of what he said was coerced.

Toronto's 911 wait times got worse last year. There were 59 days where people calling 911 waited on hold an average of 1 minute or more for an operator to answer. In 2021, there were just 5 days when callers waited that long. My story w/ @angelinaaking

This was a deeply personal experience and story to tell. I'm nervous sharing it so widely, but all immigration stories are important and I'm so grateful I have my dad's documented in his own words.

Here's a short written version of the story with some photos my dad and I look at together in the doc. BUT there are spoilers. So, if you plan on listening, I hope you'll look at the online version after.

This is a photo of freedom. After failed attempts & close calls, my dad escaped communist Romania. I’ve never heard the whole story — until I interviewed him for this radio doc. It’s about resilience, identity & wild coincidences that formed two families. https://t.co/QhWkaR56df

A CBC News investigation has uncovered long wait times when calling 911 in Toronto. Internal documents show people sometimes wait on hold for longer than two minutes before their call is answered. As @angelinaaking explains, a 911 operator is now the one calling for help.

Internal documents we obtained show how long people wait on hold to speak with a 911 operator in Toronto. The average wait time is 25 seconds, while the average longest wait time is 4 minutes and 16 seconds. The longest? 10 minutes and 2 seconds.

A baby not breathing, a drowning and a person with a gunshot wound. Those are all examples of emergencies where callers waited on hold for longer than 2 minutes before a Toronto 911 operator said they were able to answer. My latest w/ @angelinaaking:

Being mixed race, chef Haan Palcu-Chang says he focused on Asian cooking for most of his career. Now he’s using food to ensure he doesn’t lose his Romanian roots. In Part 8 of our series #CBCRediscoveringCulture, @angelinaaking speaks with him about navigating two cultures.
