Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker's office said it disagrees with the judge's ruling and is appealing it.

While Carver was in prison, his parents and older brother died, he and his wife divorced, and he couldn't be with his daughter. "They took my life away for nothing," Carver said. "I've always said that I'm not the person that was involved in [the fire], and I meant it.".

At a hearing, a retired fire-safety engineer testified that the investigator relied on old myths that have since been discredited by science. The engineer said there was no evidence the blaze was started with a flammable liquid and that it could've been an electrical fire.

The judge who threw out Carver's convictions found that a fire investigator falsely testified at trial that there was physical evidence someone started the blaze with a flammable liquid like gasoline. No such proof existed.
