SNP conference backs John Swinney’s independence strategy. Not even close. If the party wins a majority of seats at the next election they will take that as a mandate to start negotiations for a second referendum.

Amendment A - the de facto referendum vote which would have gutted John Swinney’s motion - overwhelmingly rejected by delegates at SNP conference.

Swinney gets a standing ovation as he tells delegates: “Nobody knows the tactics I'm going to deploy if we get 65 seats in the Scottish Parliament.”

Swinney: “The problem with amendments A and B is that these are judgments that we are being encouraged to come to. They are not agreed processes. Nobody else has consented to them. Nobody else has said we'll accept the outcome of the results of amendment A or B.”

John Swinney accepts Amendment C on EU membership and Amendment D to “work with others to establish a structure which will involve other political parties and groups sympathetic to Scotland’s future as an independent nation.”

Ooohs and oh nos in the room as Amdt A backer Chris Hanlon tells delegates: “We have the opportunity here to say to people, listen, vote for us in the constituency for independence and vote whoever you like on the list, if you like.”

SNP deputy Keith Brown has muddied the waters ar party's Indy debate by saying aim is to show 'an unambiguous majority of people' have voted for Indy. But Swinney (and Brown's) formal plan is to claim mandate if SNP win majority of MSPs in May, which cd be done with <50% of vote

SNP rebel Graeme McCormick, speaking at the conference indy debate: "We know that this party is hollowing out. There isn't a branch that hasn't suffered significant reductions. So people are not renewing their membership, and they're walking away. We've got to reverse that".

Swinney: "I did not take on the leadership of this party to make a difference at the margins or to make a bit of progress towards independence or even pave the way for the next generation to win it. No, I took on the leadership to deliver independence".

He tells delegates: "We are within touching distance of the 65 seats that will make the world sit up and take notice and deliver our choice over Scotland's future."
