Some good news, for a change: my latest translation - of the Spanish filmmaker/ critic Victor Erice's text on the late works of Nicholas Ray - can now be read at the @Metrograph's Journal.

The myth of liberal academia as refuge is dead. Next for the trash heap of history: the fiction of Israeli legitimacy/ morality.

As for the piece, it is a beauty, one that clearly illuminates a murky, difficult period in Ray's creative life - particularly the oft misunderstood 'Lightning Over Water' - and links author and subject in a way that is very touching.

Both films, showing in 35mm, are highly recommended. Many thanks to the TotM troupe, and to Erice for his blessing.

Another day, another detailed appraisal of 'The Dancing Soul of the Walking People' by a writer, initials JB. This time, it's Judith Bloch's 1981 review for Film Quarterly, and it's no less an evocative text than all the others I've shared.
