Offensive and stereotypical terms often appear in openly available datasets, CWI researchers found. These datasets risk spreading cultural stereotypes further, as they power many applications (such as online dictionaries) and machine learning algorithms. đ https://t.co/rRxHUNXf0G

If we search for the term âslaveâ in Europeana, weâll get aroudn 9K hits. In some cases, this term refers to people. At the same time, âWords Matterâ recommends to use âenslaved personâ to avoid ânormalising the category âslaveâ as an inherent identity of a personâ.

At @cultural_ai, we've developed a knowledge graph of controversial terms and linked them to cultural heritage experts' explanations, suggestions, and other datasets (for example, Wikidata). We based our work on the publication "Words Matter" by @Tropenmuseum

Historical stereotypes are a part of cultural heritage. We have access to millions of heritage objects online. And many of them contain outdated and offensive language, which we wouldnât use today. How can we make representation of cultural heritage more inclusive and respectful?

Grateful to debut as a @FAccTConference author @ #FAccT2022 , with an interdisciplinary work I am very excited about! As a researcher working on data-driven information filtering (e.g. in recommendation), it's an ongoing challenge to let systems make inclusive selections. [1/3]
