I was always interested in trying out the Octatrack but never pulled trigger. But watching @jonwayne’s channel made me a believer in using it for hip-hop. Very glad I did-it’s probably the most fun I’ve had with any machine I’ve ever used. And its difficulty is overstated.

Turned our record in to the label. Listened back, and still feel like I need to make a bunch of small mixing changes. Idk how mix engineers do it. And by it, I mean decide they’re done and actually stop working on a thing.

So, I will make things that sound like they were made in 1995. And I will make things that don’t quite align with any era. And sometimes it won’t work. But my only goal is to fulfill the impulses I have to make art, even if no one gives me any money or attention for doing it.

I’m just not down with the idea that we have to tether ourselves to one kind of thing in order to maintain some sort of “brand”aesthetic. That feels at odds with the whole purpose of making things in the first place.

And I think it comes from this constant push to “build a brand” in order to monetize everything. And I would never criticize anyone for trying to make a living with their art.

Sometimes I get in this thought loop where I think I should be consistent in the kind of music I make. Because if I’m not I won’t be able to build and maintain an audience. Then I remember that I make art for myself and I should do whatever the fuck I want.
